In the wake of the box office success of Godzilla, we’re willing to bet that we’ll be seeing many more giant monster movies on the big screen in the coming years, and one of those films we’re definitely hoping for is a sequel to last year’s Pacific Rim.
While nothing is set in stone, Guillermo del Toro has dropped some tasty tidbits about the flick, so read on!
BuzzFeed reports that despite the fact that Legendary Pictures hasn’t yet fully committed to a Pacific Rim 2, del Toro is nevertheless working on the script, with both he and Zak Penn proceeding as if the green light has been given. That’s the spirit!
“We’ve been working for a few months now in secret,” the visionary filmmaker told the website. “We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”
Del Toro hopes to tackle the sequel after producing his next project, and he says that it’ll pick up directly after the events of the first film, with Charlie Hunnam reprising the role of Raleigh Becket and Rinko Kikuchi returning as Mako Mori.
“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion,” del Toro said. “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”
What are you waiting for, Legendary?! Give this bad boy the green light!!
