On Monday, April 14, at 8PM, Syfy will be premiering its newest series, “Metal Hurlant Chronicles”. The show is imported from French company WE Productions and follows the sci-fi anthology Metal Hurlant, better known in the United States as Heavy Metal.
We got a sneak peek and will let you know what to expect.
The episode Syfy shared with Dread Central is “King’s Crown,” based on a bloody tournament being held to determine the new king as the previous ruler is nearing death.
The episode is absolutely loaded with awesome fighting action featuring Michael Jai White and Scott Adkins. The athleticism and choreography displayed in the various dueling scenes is easily worth the price of admission here.
Aside from the fighting, which is obviously the centerpiece of the episode, the acting is okay and the digital effects are very good at times, but not always consistent. There are a few spots where the computer-generated images look a bit cheesy, but other times when they are outstanding.
The setting appears to be medieval times at first, but we soon see the presence of droids. We learn that the society was once a technological haven, but a corpulent and malicious king stripped his people of all technology and plunged them back into a new dark ages, keeping the technology for himself. (He did still have a Facebook page, but being the only one with access, it became kind of boring. Okay, that part’s not true.)
Overall, the episode was a lot of fun. The action was top-notch, and although the acting might not have been Oscar-worthy, it was good enough to carry the story, which had a nice twist ending. And each new episode of “Metal Hurlant Chronicles” will feature a new cast, new world, and whole new story, making for a completely fresh experience every time. It’s definitely worth tuning in to Syfy next Monday to see the premiere episode of “Metal Hurlant Chronicles.”
Based on the popular comics anthology Metal Hurlant, each of the 12 episodes in this series takes place on a different planet with a different cast, linked together by the presence of an asteroid which plays a vital role in their lives – and the future of their civilization. The international cast includes James Marsters, Rutger Hauer, Michael Jai White, and Joe Flanigan.
