Just a few days back it was reported that a new Underworld movie was getting ready to roll in New Zealand (“Kiwis in the Underworld” – October 2007), but that was literally all the information we had on it.
Today Daily Variety broke the details of the film, which will serve as a prequel to the existing franchise. Creature effects man Patrick Tatopoulos will be at the helm of Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans with Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy and Rhona Mitra all on board to star.
Underworld 1 & 2 penner Danny McBride had scripting duties, and creator Len Wiseman is on board to co-produce. The prequel will follow a Lycan (aka werewolf) as he rises up against his cruel vampire master (Nighy) back when the Death Dealers kept the beasts as their slaves.
This will mark Tatopolous’ debut behind the camera, finally, and personally I couldn’t be happier that they’re moving forward with a story that finally gives more attention to the werewolves than the vamps. No Kate Beckinsale in super tight clothing, sadly, but you take the good with the bad.
