Film Adaptation Planned for Nicholas Pekearo's Posthumously Published The WolfmanExactly seven years ago, NYC auxiliary police officer Nicholas Pekearo and his partner, Yevgeniy Marshalik, were shot and killed in the line of duty. At the time Pekearo was just getting his footing as a novelist, and now his posthumously published The Wolfman is heading to the big screen.

Per Deadline, Macmillan Entertainment and Everest Entertainment Group are developing a feature film from The Wolfman, a novel written by Nicholas Pekearo in 2008 and published by Tor Books in 2009.

The story tells of a lost soul who happens to be a werewolf. He struggles with his affliction until he decides to focus on the bad guys who deserve it, including a serial killer preying on young girls.

Pekearo, a crime and comic book buff, was shot six times by the crazed gunman who also killed his partner. Both were unarmed. For more info on what transpired, check out this story in the New York Times from March 16, 2007.

Macmillan Entertainment is the film and TV arm of Macmillan Publishers. Its head, Brendan Deneen, and Everest Entertainment Group’s Sean Davis are working closely with Pekearo’s mother, Iola Latman, to shape the werewolf story for the screen. Davis also runs the management company The Phoenix Organization.

“I read The Wolfman shortly after its release and couldn’t get the character of Marlowe Higgins and the world Pekearo created out of my head,” Davis said. “This is not your typical werewolf piece, and I was amazed by how much new territory he uncovered in this first novel. I have high hopes for this as it seems there is now finally a market for pieces like this, seeing the success of brilliant limited series such as ‘True Detective,’ and audiences now have a hunger for out of the box anti-heroes. In talking with those around him while he was alive, it was Nicholas’ hope to see this turned into a series, whether it was film or television, taking a similar journey to the one Bruce Banner did in The Incredible Hulk. Having died a hero’s death trying to protect people while chasing down a madman while he was unarmed, I hope Nicholas’ voice as a writer finally gets the attention it deserves and the journey he started with Marlowe continues.”

The book’s synopsis follows; look for more on the adaptation as it comes.

Synopsis:
Marlowe Higgins has had a hard life. Since being dishonorably discharged after a tour in Vietnam, he’s been in and out of prison, moving from town to town, going wherever the wind takes him. He can’t stay in one place too long–every full moon he kills someone.

Marlowe Higgins is a werewolf. For years he struggled with his affliction, until he found a way to use this unfortunate curse for good–he only kills really bad people. Settling at last in the small town of Evelyn, Higgins works at a local restaurant and even has a friend, Daniel Pearce, one of Evelyn’s two police detectives.

One night everything changes. It turns out Marlowe Higgins isn’t the only monster lurking in the area. A fiendish serial killer, known as the Rose Killer, is brutally murdering young girls all around the county. Higgins targets the killer as his next victim, but on the night of the full moon, things go drastically wrong…
