Zella: Monster Martial Law Brings Latex Suits and Miniature Sets Back to the Giant Monster FilmCGI has taken taken over monster movies in the States, but for one small group of students at the Osaka University of Arts, old school rubber suits and miniature buildings drive the production of their daikaiju eiga (giant monster film).

Get set for your first look at Zella: Monster Martial Law.

Practical effects, be they giant rubber suits or a gallon of karo syrup, are almost always preferred to CGI, and Zella,, directed by Shingo Maehata, seems to be a labor of love for someone who holds this tradition so dear. Clocking in at a mere 41 minutes and inspired by Godzilla, Gamera, and stop-motion guru Ray Harryhausen, production on the film was assisted by Hiromasa Mitsudome, who worked as special effects supervisor on the “Ultraman” TV series.

Check out the teaser below for a quick glimpse at the monstrous and demon-like kaiju Zella as he battles the cyborg Isoroku. When it’s complete, the film will be subtitled and released online so we can all join in on the kaiju fun.
