Last weekend (November 18/19) writer/director Jason Christopher’s debut film Down the Road was named Best Feature during the 2011 ShockFest Film Festival in Los Angeles, California, on a night where Eli Roth, James Gunn and Clint Howard (who also has a cameo in Down the Road) were all honored for their contributions to the world of genre cinema.

Dread Central caught up with Christopher recently while he was in town for the West Coast premiere of Down the Road (review here) to get his reaction to taking home top honors during the fifth annual ShockFest Film Fest.

Christopher said, “Back in February we flew out to Los Angeles to do an interview for Indie Horror Month to promote Down the Road, and here we are not even an entire year later flying out for the West Coast premiere of it, and that’s pretty amazing itself. We had no idea at first that Down The Road was going to be nominated for Best Feature, and once we found out, it was pretty nerve-wracking. But the screening went well, and we met a lot of people, which was just cool already, and then at the end of ShockFest we had won for Best Feature.”

“I couldn’t believe it; it was surreal, and I’m so proud to share the award with everyone, especially Deven (Lobascio, producer), who worked on Down the Road with me. What was even cooler was that during our trip to LA we got word that I won Best Director at the 2011 HorrorQuest Film Festival in Atlanta and that our lead actor Brian Gallagher won Best Actor at HorrorQuest for his performance as Hunter Isth, the villain. I couldn’t even believe it!”

“Brian’s a great actor and really deserved that award; not a lot of killers walk away with a best actor award so I think that says a lot about his performance in Down the Road. Overall, I’m just really happy about everything that’s happening with the movie on the festival circuit and hope that more people get to enjoy the movie, too.”
