Even though we felt rather lukewarm about Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, we’re still anxiously awaiting his follow-up, Chappie, even more so now that a Hollywood heavyweight has joined the cast. Read on for what we know so far.
Actually, we don’t know much aside from the fact that Hugh Jackman (Prisoners, The Wolverine) has announced that he has a part in the new production, which will be filmed in South Africa. Per Screen Daily, while at the Zurich Film Festival to receive the Golden Icon Award, he told the assembled press, “I’m there [Johannesburg] for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment and MRC are reuniting with Blomkamp for Chappie, which tells of a robot, voiced by Blomkamp regular Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium), who gets stolen by two gangsters who plan to use him for their criminal purposes. Jose Pablo Cantillo and experimental South African rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visser co-star. Blomkamp will direct the script he wrote with Terri Tatchell and will also produce the film with Simon Kinberg.
Look for lots more soon, and for now expect to see the finished product in March, 2015.
