Exclusive: Megan Hayes Talks Plus One, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and More!

Plus One (+1) from Dennis Iliadis (The Last House on the Left) is like a cross between Can’t Hardly Wait and “The Twilight Zone.” During a high school party a strange occurrence takes place, creating doubles of each partygoer who repeats what they did less than an hour ago.
The leads slowly find out what’s happening and try to keep things low key until the entire party finds out, resulting in a violent finale. Actress Megan Hayes wasn’t invited to the party, but she does crash it alongside her stoner boyfriend (Adam David Thompson) – the drug dealer of choice who comes into contact with his doppelganger as she watches in horror.
We spoke with Megan recently about Plus One and also tried to get a little information about her role in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, wherein she plays one of the addicted, emaciated Morphlings.
Dread Central: Can you talk a little bit about the plot of +1 and how it’s a unique take on the teen coming-of-age movie? It’s far from being another house party gone haywire romp with a lot of T&A.
Megan Hayes: It’s that and more. That’s what I love about it. It is that twist on John Hughes; it reminds me of Weird Science a little bit, especially the Teddy plotline. It’s that whole play on the teen, angsty, ‘We’re having a big blowout party’ and then everything goes haywire. But it goes haywire in a unique way. Time is messed with and you have you in another time but it’s just by a few moments. That’s what I love about the twist.
DC: There are a lot of characters in the film, so it might be a good idea to ask you the stock question of what character you actually play in +1.
MH: She crashes the party with her meth-head boyfriend. They’re a pretty unwelcome lot. She’s an absolute loudmouth troublemaker. But what’s great is that Bonnie is witness to the very first moment of the mayhem that ensues in the whole movie, so it was really fun to be a part of that.
DC: Was it disappointing to not be involved with the actual party scenes and not be able to interact with your double?
MH: She’s such a great part and she helps propel the story so you can’t ask for a more pivotal character than that. Granted, would it have been interesting to see Bonnie encounter a fellow Bonnie? I think that might have been too much for anybody!
DC: Maybe they just would have gone back to the apartment and gotten stoned together.
MH: I know, really. I think she would have flipped her shit and, for sure, tried to kill her probably. Ultimately, all I want to do is help tell a good story and I love this story.
DC: Can you talk about your experience on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and explain who the Morphlings are for those who don’t know?
MH: I don’t know how much I can say. I am the tribute from District Six. The morphlings are addicted to a drug called morphling – a pain killer that’s kind of a morphine-esque kind of drug. My experience on Hunger Games couldn’t have been better. I was embraced by everyone and had a fantastic experience. It was a really fun role to play; the director [Francis Lawrence] was incredibly kind but also incredibly smart and knew exactly what he wanted. It was a really ideal experience overall.
DC: How much better was craft services on The Hunger Games then on +1?
MH: Lemme tell ya’ about craft services on The Hunger Games. I really couldn’t partake of it that much because I was on a very strict diet where I had to lose and get to a very malnourished-looking weight. So, it looked great but I basically ate a lot of almonds and a lot of fruits and veggies and that was about it.
DC: That’s kind of an interesting connection between your character in Hunger Games and then in +1 where you’re both addicts.
MH: I know! Isn’t that great? I’m not gonna lie, fingers crossed, I hope this is my new niche.

Synopsis
Three college friends go to the biggest party of the year, each looking for something different: love, sex, a simple human connection. When a supernatural phenomenon disrupts the party, it lights a fuse on what will become the strangest night anyone has ever seen.
