More on the Oculus and Film District Distro SituationA few days ago we told you that Film District would no longer be handling distribution for the new film from Absentia director Mike Flanagan entitled Oculus. Today we have a much clearer picture as to why.

It was nowhere near as bad as The Hollywood Reporter had made it sound as a source very close to the film wrote in to explain:

Wanted to clarify one point. FilmDistrict didn’t actually drop OCULUS at all. In fact, [the filmmakers] exercised an option [they] had contractually that [they] could pull the film and shop it to different distributors if they didn’t meet certain conditions. FilmDistrict loves the film and was considering a platform release, and because of the strong buzz and high test numbers (not to mention the incredibly enthusiastic reception from TIFF), [the filmmakers] decided to exercise [their] option and aggressively seek a wide release, which [they] feel the film deserves. FilmDistrict has been nothing but supportive of this decision.”

There, that should make things crystal clear.

Oculus will premiere at this September’s Toronto International Film Festival, where it will be looking for a new distributor. Though that’s the plan at the moment, FilmDistrict could still end up releasing the film if it doesn’t pick up a buyer in Toronto.

Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites star with Rory Cochrane, Katee Sackhoff, Annalise Basso, and Garrett Ryan, along with James Lafferty and Miguel Sandoval. Oculus is directed by Mike Flanagan from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Howard.

Synopsis
Oculus is a spine-chilling supernatural tale of two damaged siblings (Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites) who, as children, witnessed their parents’ harrowing descent into madness and murder. At long last, brother and sister reunite as adults to expose and destroy the paranormal entity they believe is responsible: the Lasser Glass — a legendary mirror their family once owned.
