Toy company NECA recently won us all over in a big way with action figures of Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger that are quite unlike any we’ve ever seen in the past.
Rather than once again depicting the characters as they were seen in the movies, NECA instead decided to model the toys after the oddball looks they took on in their NES games from the ’80s: Jason decked out in bright blues and purples and Freddy rocking a sweet pair of red pants that would make Michael Jackson jealous.
Just to properly introduce myself here on Dread Central before I continue with this shameless self-promotion, my name is John Squires and I have for the past five years been running the horror blog Freddy in Space, which hopefully you’ve heard of (though I won’t hold it against ya if you haven’t!). One of my dear friends is Frank Browning, a Photoshop master who is the official artist for my blog, and we’ve whipped up all sorts of fun little projects together. I come to him with a fun idea, he executes the idea, and then we share it with the world.
My latest idea? What if NECA continued with the theme of video game-based toys and turned the Atari versions of Michael Myers and Leatherface into action figures of their own? What would that look like? Frank and I are here to show ya. So check out the mock-up images we came up with, and let us know if you’d buy these toys!
