#SDCC 2013: RoboCop Rating RevealedEvan Dickson from our brothers in harm Bloody Disgusting just checked in with a quick tidbit of news from the San Diego Comic-Con concerning the much talked about remake of RoboCop. Read on for details.

Director Jose Padilha said they were pretty much aiming for a PG-13. “We were shooting the movie to be seen by the broadest possible audience, which means PG-13. This whole idea about ‘RoboCop’ has to be “R” because the first one was amazingly violent… I never really bought into that. You know, ‘The Dark Knight’ was PG-13, so you can get away with a lot.”

Sam Jackson added, “It would be “R” for its time, not “R” now.” Padilla agreed, “Yeah, maybe now it isn’t.”

Jose Padilha’s film stars Joel Kinnaman as the title hero plus Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jay Baruchel, Michael Keaton, Michael Kenneth Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Abbie Cornish, Aimee Garcia, and Jackie Earle Haley.

  1. Sorry I’m late, I was finishing a few posts on the Insane Clown Posse free proboards forum. Anything good going on in here ???

A few fun facts, I’ve never seen Robocop. And I enjoy the Dark Knight animated movies more than the real actor movies.

    Okay, that is all.

    • Well the posts have officially gone off the rails. There’s been talk of The Dark Knight, Human Centipede 2, a fond farewell from Terminal and Samuel Jackson said something really, really stupid. You know, the usual.

  2. I just pictured the first guy to hear about the remake sitting down and crying on top of a pile of Robocop vs Terminator comics.

  3. I’m also on the train of thinking The Dark Knight is not a good movie. Look, yes, Heath Ledger was great as the Joker, and Aaron Eckhart was equally great as Dent/Two-Face, but I got pretty fucking sick of the movie shoving its themes in my face and narrating every little thing as if I was an idiot.

Actually, all of Nolan’s Batman movies are like that, and they just don’t feel like Batman movies to me (couldn’t Gotham have at least looked like Gotham and not fucking Chicago or wherever they shot that movie?), particularly The Dark Knight Rises where Nolan seems to prove he has no idea who Batman really is as a character. At this point the definitive Batman adaptations in my books are Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.

And yeah, the original Robocop would SO be a PG-13 movie nowadays; I mean hell getting melted by toxic waste and splattered on cars is a definitive PG-13 staple these days, didn’t you know? I personally don’t know what to think about this remake, I’ll let a trailer decide but I’m probably skipping it.

And back to Batman because I just remembered something, where the fuck is a movie adaptation of Hush? We NEED a movie with Hush.

  4. The Dark Knight was also shite.

But yeah, I mean, the original Robocop might get a 15 in the UK if re-evalued, maybe, but it would still be an R in the US. I mean, christ, nevermind the scene where he gets shot to bits slowly and graphically, the toxic waste deformity/hit by car scene alone would be enough.

    • You thought The Dark Knight was shit? You’re my new best friend. I’m going to sound like a total dick, but if it wasn’t for the unfortunate passing of Ledger I can guarantee you it wouldn’t have been such a hit with the kids. It was like The Crow all over again. But at least The Crow was a genuinely good movie.

      • For me, Heath Ledger and Gary Oldman were the only things making that movie watchable. It was way too long and somber for such a ridiculous story.

      • Yeah, pretty much, Heaths joker was decent and I like Gary Oldman, but the film was way too long and stupid and the whole last third was just pathetic.

          • 1) who’s gary oldman?

            2) Dark Knight was a fun if not passable film. There are much worse out there.

            3) Heath Ledgers Joker was a fantastic chaotic character, and imho was leagues above Jack Nicholsons portrayal.

            4) I will give robocop a chance on redbox for $1.

            5) Does anyone have a spare copy of the original criterion collection because I needs it.

          • 1) You’re a fucking idiot. Go watch Leon the Professional.

            2) I’s give it a solid 2.5

            3) You’re a fucking idiot.

            4) That is the single most clever thing you’ve ever said. Bravo.

            5) Nope. And to be quite honest, it doesn’t add that much to the story. It’s not like the director’s cut of Mimic or anything.

          • With posts like this it’s a wonder the same six people comment on articles while there hasn’t been many new users on DC in a long time. I’ve kept out of the Robocop remake debating because of intelligent posts like this and many others who sound like trolls on an Insane Clown Posse free proboards forum.

It’s become refreshing to see people like UC, WIB, Foy, and Sirand occasionally offer their opinions. At least they’re polite and often offer something to a news item.

I miss when Dread Central was comprised of interesting debating and occasional snark. Now it’s just full on ignorance and sheer moronic trolling. I’ll seek intelligent film discussion elsewhere, you guys have fun with your point by point insulting of each other for having different tastes in a movie from the eighties.

PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES IN ENTERTAINMENT. Get used to it.

Life’s too short for this meaningless nonsense. Adios.

          • Meanwhile, this is the guy who told me to “fuck off” because I gave a good review to Human Centipede II.

          • In his defense, Human Centipede 2 was hot garbage. :P

          • I will come to Fini’s defense…. I liked HC2.

          • Terminal, I will apologize for that last comment. arandomthought is my good friend and I was screwing with him. He’s my boy. I can see now if you wandered in and saw that you’d be upset. Beyond that, I think these comments have been fine. What we have here is a a failure to communicate, blah blah.

          • I have refrained from saying anything on this thread because I simply don’t give a shit. Robocop is a fine, fun movie, but that’s about it. It’s smarter than your average eighties action movie, but it’s not Citizen Kane or anything like that. I’m glad someones giving this remake shit though, because it looks to deserve it. Carry on, fellow Dreadheads!

          • No offense dude, but half the things I see you post could be considered trolling easily. Franks my bud and we happily disagree on a lot. Also, the human centipede 2 was not that bad.

  5. “Sam Jackson added, “It would be “R” for its time, not “R” now.””

Yes, that’s how it’s still an 18 certificate to this day in the UK, you daft tit.

  6. 1) Sam Jackson has lost his fucking mind.

    2) Comparing Robocop to the Dark Knight is your first HUGE red flag.

    3) “Broadest possible audience” is your second GIANT red flag.

    4) Anyone remotely interested in the move is as least in their 20’s.

    5) Sam Jackson has lost his fucking mind.

Know what? Blow it out your ass, Hollywood. I’m going to watch my DVD right now. I can always rely on Clarence Boddicker to calm me down.

  7. Wow! If Sam Jackson and the director think that the original would be rated PG-13 nowadays, they need to re-watch the fucking movie.
