Neill Blomkamp Reveals Interesting First Choice for Elysium LeadBefore Elysium turned into a much bigger budgeted film, director Neill Blomkamp had a somewhat different vision for the flick’s leading man. Yep, this would have been one hell of a different movie for sure. Read on for details.

Blomkamp reveals to The Playlist that before Elysium landed Matt Damon, Blomkamp was considering a smaller budgeted version of the movie and thought of South African rapper Die Antwoord’s Ninja (pictured) for the lead. When the rapper declined (he would’ve had to use an American accent), Blomkamp then went to Eminem(!), who would only do it if the movie was shot in Detroit. Of course, Blomkamp got the megabucks he wanted to make the movie that’s hitting theaters soon, but it speaks to his resourcefulness that he’s willing to retool as the situation allows.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp, Elysium stars Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Matt Damon, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, and Diego Luna. Look for it in theaters August 9, 2013.

Synopsis
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.
