Box Office Super 8You know we live in strange times when a movie can open at the box office in first place with a tally of about $37 million and the studio’s reaction is a sigh of relief because they were fearing a flop.

J.J. Abrams’ I-Can’t-Believe-It’s-Not-Spielberg homagebuster Super 8 opened this past weekend on over 3,300 screens and pulled in somewhere in the neighborhood of $37 million. By all accounts tracking had been soft leading into the opening weekend, and Paramount was expecting only around $30 mil for the flick that allegedly cost a mere $50 mil. According to Deadline, this is a victory. Regardless of mixed opinions on the merits of the film, a non-sequel, non-comic book movie topping the box office at any point this summer sounds like a win to me.

It remains to be seen if Super 8 will have box office legs and will be interesting to see how it holds up next weekend when we all finally get the answer to the question most of us have been asking ourselves for a while now, “Does the world really give a crap about a Green Lantern movie?
