ABC Orders Edgar Allan Poe Detective Pilot

abcABC has ordered a pilot for "Poe", a new crime prodcedural that would see author Edgar Allan Poe as a detective using unconventional methods to investigate dark mysteries in 1840s Boston. While this may sound a bit of a stretch, keep in mind that Edgar Allan Poe is not just a master of a macabre, he is considered to be the inventor of the detective-fiction genre.

Deadline Hollywood reports that "Kyle XY" scribe Chris Hollier is penning "Poe" for Warner Brothers and executive producer Dan Lin. Casting should begin imminently. I just hope they don't do something stupid like hire some CW Network pretty boy and slap a mustache on him.

Keep in mind this is just the greenlighting of a pilot so everything is still very early in the development stage. Certainly no guarantee "Poe" will even make it to series. I could see this working as a series produced by the BBC. The network most recently responsible for "Happy Town", "Scoundrels", "Cavemen", and Shonda Rhimes' horny doctors disease-of-the-week shows makes me a tad skeptical they can pull it off.

Still, I must say, speaking strictly as someone who works for an ABC affiliate station and often finds himself proving the old adage "you couldn't pay me to watch this" true, a period detective show about Edgar Allan Poe investigating crimes of a macabre nature far more interests me than the latest workplace melodrama about attractive young professionals trying to make their way in the world while taking turns screwing each other's brains out or the latest formulaic episode of "Doctor Cop: Attorney at Law".

Here's a radical idea: Turn Poe's writing into films and tv shows.

This show is another stupid idea.
