It isn’t often that you find a horror film festival focused on the female of the species, but that’s exactly what the Viscera Film Festival does, and the fourth annual event will be taking place in Los Angeles this coming July 17th, 2011. And if you happen to be a female filmmaker, submissions are open now through February 28th.

The Viscera Film FestivalHere’s a bit of background on Viscera, whose board of directors is comprised of Stacy Hammon, Shannon Lark, and Heidi Martinuzzi:

Specializing in short horror films made by the female gender, the Viscera Film Festival hosts an annual bloody carpet event in Los Angeles for the selected filmmakers, special celebrity guests, and a live audience. Each filmmaker receives a hand-crafted Viscera Statue along with promotional materials and the option to be distributed on the next Viscera DVD Compilation. Throughout the year Viscera is continuously working to get the Viscera films screened and promoted all over the world.

MISSION: Viscera is a nonprofit organization committed to expanding opportunities for contemporary female horror filmmakers and educating the public by raising awareness of the changing roles for women in the film industry.

VISION: A world wherein all individuals are equally given the opportunity to create, share, and exploit their concept of life, pain, and freedom of expression, while fully supported in their quest.

HISTORY: Operating very differently than other festivals, Viscera started as a DIY grassroots festival exclusively online when Viscera founder, Shannon Lark, launched the fest to assist in the process of more women in working together in the industry.

Websites, magazines, critics, blog radio, affiliated festivals, and promoters became an intricate part of Viscera’s success. On top of its bloody carpet premiere, Viscera distributes a compilation DVD of the selected films to sponsors and supporters, who assist in the process of getting these films into the eyes, ears, and hands of the public. Viscera films have screened all over the world, garnishing awards, as well as being critiqued, discussed, and distributed.
