Kevin Williamson Signs New Three-Year Deal with Warner Bros. TV

Those of us who watch The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries” know that week in and week out its co-showrunners Kevin Williams and Julie Plec bust their asses to make sure the quality stays high. Obviously parent company Warner Bros. TV recognizes that fact also as it has signed a three-year deal with Williamson to not only continue in that capacity but also develop new projects for the studio.
As Deadline explains it, this marks Williamson’s first TV overall deal in a decade. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he was under a deal at Miramax TV, an extension to the pact he had on the feature side with Miramax Films following the success of his first produced script, Scream, for Miramax’ Dimension label. WME-repped Williamson, who started off as an actor before switching to writing, has written the first two Scream movies as well as the upcoming Scream 4.
On the TV side, “The Vampire Diaries” marks his second hit young-skewing series after “Dawson’s Creek”. Both series helped establish fledgling networks, the WB (“Dawson’s Creek”) and its successor, the CW (“The Vampire Diaries”). “Diaries” was a breakout hit for the CW when it launched last fall and ranks as the network’s top-rated series. Season to date, it has averaged 4 million viewers and a 2.2/7 in adults 18-34.
We’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open to see if any of Kevin’s new projects fall on the genre side of the fence. We can only hope!
