Universal Monsters Stalk The Toy Aisles Once More

This October the Universal Monsters return to the pegs of a toy store near you, courtesy of Diamond Select Toys. Your favorite fiends will be released in all new, completely original lines from the MEGO-esque retro cloth series to your basic action figure format to the little, itty bitty block figures known as Minimates. Here's a quick rundown of what is on the way along with some new in-package pictures of the basic action figure line as well as the Minimate four-pack figure sets.

Let's start with Minimates. Two, four-packs are on the way with two central themes. The Creature from the Black Lagoon pack contains the Creature in classic colors and a glow-in-the-dark version, Dr. Reed with diving gear, and Kay Lawrence, the damsel in distress! The Wolf Man pack consists of the Wolf Man himself, the Wolf Man mid-transformation, Larry Talbot in human form, and the femme fatale Gwen Conliffe. Each Minimates pack comes with interchangeable parts and accessories. These should retail for around $15.99.

The basic action figure lines come packed with one figure and a small base. On tap will be The Mummy, The Wolf Man, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon, available only at Toys R Us.

If you love the basic Wolf Man figure and think it would look killer in silver screen black & white, hit up Entertainment Earth for their exclusive version of the figure.

Deluxe versions of the Universal crew will be available online with a 7-inch Creature action figure menacing a lady in distress and the Mummy with his sarcophagus.

Diamond Select Toys is also releasing Mego like retro action figures kicking things off with the Wolf Man and Frankenstein.

The plan as of the February International Toy Fair in New York City was to release a wave of these baddies once a year in October. Of course if this line proves wildly popular, this might change!

Got to grab one of the regular sized Creature from the Black Lagoon action figures. That looks bad ass ("Creature" also happens to be my favorite of the Universal monster flicks).

Those three figures at the bottom are quite lovely and much better than the ones I had as a kid (even if Imhotep has decided to go with a blond dye-job for some strange reason). Hopefully this doesn't mean there won't be a Kharis figure though, because Kharis is *the* Mummy, Imhotep spent most of his time as some guy in a fez.

I wonder if they'll get around to doing a Bela Lugosi-based short-arse Frankenstein? The possibilities are almost endless.

Hope a Bride of Frankenstein figure is not far off.

What toy stores? Isn't everything online nowadays?

I remember going into a Toys 'R' Us to buy something for my wife, my first visit since the early 90's, and being appalled that all the whole store is not video games, clothes, and movies. I only found a little corner that had action figures! Man, I miss the 80's.

Walking down an aisle in a "Childrens Palace" as a child in the very late 70's early 80's was like being in heaven. Action figures (Star wars,GI Joe,Transformers, hell even Go-Bots and tv show characters) to the ceiling on both sides. Sigh,I miss that. When Toys R Us took over Childrens Palace it went downhill from there.
