A Peek Inside the Hair-Raising Music for Dexter Season Five

Composer Daniel LichtEarlier today we got our first look at a funereal image from the upcoming Season Five of Showtime's "Dexter", and what better way to follow it up than by peeking into the mind of Dan Licht, composer for the series, who is busy in his Los Angeles home studio conjuring up chilling sounds for the new season that begins September 26th.

Licht, seen in the photo to your right playing percussion on a human femur, will be adding the sounds of duct tape and surgical tools such as hemostats and scalpels to those of human bones, prehistoric rhythm instruments, and traditional musical instruments that we heard in previous seasons.

Licht realized a dream when he incorporated into the "Dexter" score pre-Columbian instruments such as a sacrificial drum, bone flutes, rasps, pierced phalanges, and bullroarers. “When I lived in New York, I visited the ancient music wing of the Metropolitan Museum many times and wondered what the hell the instruments behind the glass sounded like,” says Licht, laughingly adding that “I should point out the sacrificial drum did not have a human skin head as they did in Pre-Columbian times.”

Adding the sounds of duct tape and medical instruments was a natural progression for the story of a forensic expert and serial killer given that "Dexter" has a reputation for unique storytelling as well as music. “Daniel’s music adds to the richness of the landscape,” says "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall. “What you appreciate when you watch the show is that Dan heightens the emotional terrain. He has such a sensitivity to what we’re doing as actors.”

Licht, who received a BMI Award for his work on "Dexter" this past June is additionally in the studio writing music for the newest Silent Hill video game to be released in 2011. Genre fans will be pleased to hear that while the versatile Licht has scored across many genres of film, horror stories hold a soft spot for him. He says, “I got my start doing horror/thriller genre films. I enjoy the fact that music is an essential element that contributes to the tension.

Beginning August 17th the Season Four Blu-ray, DVD, and score CD will be available. In addition to the regular outlets, Milan Records will offer free downloads of select tracks from the score on the "Dexter" Facebook page from August 17th-23rd.

For more info visit Dan Licht's official website, and be sure to tune in to the season premiere of "Dexter" on September 26th at 9:00 PM ET/PT on Showtime.

"In Season Five Dexter has to get in touch with things he never felt before: guilt, sorrow, self-forgiveness. There is blowback from his reckless behavior." Along with the series regulars Peter Weller, Julia Stiles, Maria Doyle Kennedy, April Lee Hernandez, and Shawn Hatosy are all on tap for more Dark Passenger related mayhem.
