Elijah Wood’s The Woodshed, the new horror label from partners Wood, Daniel Noah, and Josh C. Waller, has announced two new projects: the original production A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and the completed feature Toad Road (review) from writer-director Jason Banker.

The Woodshed is partnering with Blackout Films and Random Bench on Toad Road, which will be the first film to go out under “The Woodshed Presents” endeavor, says Variety. The Woodshed partners discovered the film when programming Nightmare City, a horror film festival collaboration between Cinefamily, Cinespia, and The Woodshed that is currently unfolding around Los Angeles.

Programming the festival, we viewed scores of new horror films, but ‘Toad Road’ leapt out of the pack with its devastating power. We knew we had to do whatever we could to make sure this special film is seen,” said Wood.

The Woodshed will present the U.S. premiere in Los Angeles on October 23 as part of Nightmare City. It has already earned awards for director Banker and star James Davidson at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal.

Banker produced his first narrative feature, Toad Road, in collaboration with Random Bench principals Liz Levine (Camp Hollywood) and Adrian Salpeter (The French Guy).

Synopsis
Inspired by an urban legend, Toad Road is an intimate meditation on lost youth evocative of Gus Van Sant (with a racy touch of Larry Clark) and a radical deconstruction of genre cinema, a devastating and brilliant object of contemplation and dread, and a journey down unexpected paths..

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is an Iranian western(!) about vampires that will mark the feature debut of writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour. The film is described as a love story set in a fictitious Iranian ghost town reeking of death and loneliness, where a strange and jaded population is haunted by a lonesome vampire who preys upon the city’s most depraved denizens.

Shot in widescreen black-and-white and entirely in Farsi, everything from the characters, the look, a modern soundtrack of 60’s inspired Western guitar music and Iranian pop make the film a mythical mash-up of genre and culture.

When I first heard about Ana’s project; a vampire western noir, shot in black & white, in Farsi, and utilizing an entirely Iranian soundtrack, I was extremely excited. I then saw her proof of concept short and was convinced that this was a film that we’d be proud to be a part of bringing to life,” said Wood.

Amirpour and Sina Sayyah, her producing partner at Say Ahh… Prods., are partnering with The Woodshed on the project, which starts production in Taft, California, in January. “We are truly thrilled to find creative partners with bold imagination and a taste for elevated genre films. There hasn’t been an Iranian film like this before. It’s going to be something special,” added Sayyah.
