Weekend Box Office: Not Much Room in the Hotel Transylvania for FrankenweenieIn this weekend’s box office showdown between 3D animated kiddy Halloween monster movies, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie was something of a surprise loser, proving no match for Adam Sandler’s Dracula and the rest of the monsters vacationing in the Hotel Transylvania.

Hotel Tranylvania lost the top spot to Taken 2 in its second weekend, but the $26.3 million it took in was more than double the debut of poor Frankenweenie. Tim Burton’s animated remake of his 1984 live-action short film flatlined with a paltry $11.5 million, 5th place opening weekend. That’s also less than a third of what Hotel Transylvania opened to last weekend. The Sony Animation production has already taken in a stellar $76 million domestically in only two weeks while the Disney stop-motion animated flick opened to barely half of what Burton’s similarly animated Corpse Bride did a few years back.

Can’t really be too shocked that Frankenweenie failed to connect off the bat with younger audiences what with it being presented in black & white and much of it being an homage to classic monster movies kids today probably aren’t as familiar with as their parents. Unlike Hotel Translyvania, Frankenweenie is more of a kids’ movie for adults, at least that’s what it sure seemed to be when I saw it in a theater where the adults in the crowd looked to outnumber the kids 3-to-1.

House at the End of the Street dropped down to 8th place with another $3.6 million. That brings its total up to $27.5 million.

Despite having been available via VOD for weeks, Magnolia Pictures opened V/H/S in 15 theaters, where it made a modest $40,000.

Next weekend Sinister finally opens. I’m just going to say it right now: If that movie flops, we riot.
