Update on the Status of The Passage Film Adaptation

As Elaine mentioned in her list of "Summer Reading to Chill Your Bones", Justin Cronin's The Passage is turning into THE book to read this summer so no doubt Fox 2000 will be fast-tracking its screen adaptation, on which Cronin recently provided a small update.

In an interview with the AP's Alicia Rancilio that appeared on Yahoo! News promoting the recent release of The Passage, Cronin stated, "I know there's a script that seems to be ready, and the people I've spoken to are superimpressive, so smart and they seem really, really taken by the story. I just can't wait to see what they come up with." As a reminder of our story from September, 2009, when we first heard about Fox 2000's acquisition of the novel, which is slated to be part one of a trilogy, it's being handled by Ridley Scott's production company, and the screenwriter is John Logan, who penned Scott's Gladiator.

And what of the three-part series Cronin has planned? The author says, "The word 'series' isn't quite right. I want each of these books to be a satisfying book all in itself... To call it a trilogy is true but not really the whole truth and not the exact truth, but there are three books all taking place in this world with this basic set of characters."

And lest anyone think Cronin is merely jumping on the currently hot vamp bandwagon, he assures readers that yes, "vampires were really sort of the vehicle for what I wanted to do, but I always liked vampire stories. I grew up on a steady diet of vampires. There's a sense that vampires are the monsters of the moment. There's a lot of vampire novels, television shows, movies, but the truth is they've never gone away, and every generation reinvents the vampire narrative to suit its anxieties and tastes."
