Well, Stephen King fans, things aren’t looking good for the proposed adaptation of his The Dark Tower series. Earlier this month we learned Warner Bros. would be making a decision on moving ahead with the project within two weeks, and said two weeks are up…

According to Variety’s Showblitz, Warner Bros., which had been in talks to take on The Dark Tower movies and miniseries after Universal let them go, has also decided to not move forward. The original plan was for the story to be told through three films and two limited run TV series.

In case you’ve forgotten, Ron Howard was set to direct and produce along with Brian Grazer and Stephen King through Grazer and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment banner, and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman had recently delivered his latest draft for the film’s first installment. Javier Bardem was out, and Russell Crowe had shown interest in playing the lead if Warners gave the film a greenlight.

Imagine could still take the project back out to other studios, but this latest news is a blow to the film’s future for sure. We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for any new developments.

The Dark Tower is about the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers with Deschain becoming humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an Old West feel.
