The Asylum Breeding a Megapiranha

When I got word from my man Avery that The Asylum had officially announced their mockbuster of Alex Aja’s Piranha 3D, I was not the least bit surprised other than I fully expected them to just add an "s" on the end and call it Piranhas. Instead the Asylum madmen have decided to up the ante by making it a Megapiranha.

Now the question becomes whether Megapiranha means we should expect a super-sized piranha a la Asylum's Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (review here) or if they are basing their film around the prehistoric Megapiranha, a toothier, three-foot version of the carnivorous fish that went extinct millions of years ago. Given the big screen 3D remake is about these Megapiranha, I would say odds are high the latter will prove the case. No further details as of now, but expect that to change very shortly.

The Asylum Breeding a Megapiranha

Megapiranha isn't the only 2010 production the Asylum has announced. Their version of Sherlock Holmes, in which the famous detective battles giant monsters attacking London, hits DVD shelves on January 26th. Joe Lando and Claudia Christian star in the celestial disaster epic Meteor Apocalypse on February 23rd. The Asylum goes west on March 30th with the western 6 Guns. Look for them to ride the coattails of the Clash of the Titans remake with their version of the 7 Voyages of Sinbad.

But as exciting as all of these films sound, one other new movie they have only just announced the title of for later this year excites me more than flesh-eating fish, British-invading dinosaurs, meteor strikes, Wild West shootouts, and sword-swinging sailors. The title is simply listed at this time as ... Airline Disaster. I have no doubt this is merely the working title until they come up with a real title. Personally, I hope they keep it. I would pay money to watch a movie called Airline Disaster just so I could say later that I once saw a movie called Airline Disaster. Can Traffic Accident be far behind?

I dig titles like "Airline Disaster" because you know exactly what you're going to get.

The only thing better than earning the right to proudly proclaim you've seen a film called "Airline Disaster" would be the ad campaign for the next film by the same people.

Imagine actually watching a trailer where sometime during the eighty-nine second running time, bold type appears on screen in the form of the declarative sentence "From the people who brought you "Airline Disaster" ".

Now that's something to look forward to.
