Exclusive: Actress Ariel Gade Talks Some Guy Who Kills People and More

Already, at age 15, actress Ariel Gade has managed to make quite a name for herself inside and out of the genre world, and Dread Central had the opportunity to chat briefly with her about her most recent project: Some Guy Who Kills People
Ever since making her debut on television at the young age of 6, Gade has gone on to co-star in films like Envy, Dark Water and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem and portrayed youngster Rose Varon in the cult classic ABC TV series “Invasion.” In Jack Perez’s dark comedy Some Guy Who Kills People she appears as precocious tweener Amy Wheeler, who not only discovers she has a dad (Kevin Corrigan) but also figures out that he very well could be the killer behind a string of grisly murders in their small town.
Written by Ryan A. Levin and produced by John Landis, Some Guy Who Kills People also stars Karen Black, Barry Bostwick, Leo Fitzpatrick and Lucy Davis. The flick is set to be released this week on DVD shelves everywhere courtesy of the fine folks at Anchor Bay Entertainment.
During our interview with Gade she discusses her experiences working on Some Guy Who Kills People, collaborating with her onscreen dad (Corrigan) and what the future holds for the up-and-coming actress.
Dread Central: Let’s start at the beginning; can you talk about what attracted you to the project?
Ariel Gade: Mostly it was the storyline- I really liked the father-daughter relationship and just how different all of the characters were. They all felt so unusual but real. Also, I liked how different Amy is from myself in real life; she’s really outgoing and stuff, and I’m really shy.
Plus, I really enjoy characters that have some emotional depth to them, and Amy had a lot going on because not only is she having problems at school with some bullies, but she finds out about her dad – which is huge – but then she finds out he’s a killer, which is definitely not what she was hoping for in a dad.
Dread Central: The relationship between you and Kevin (Corrigan) seems so natural in the film; did you guys work a lot together before filming to get your chemistry right?
Ariel Gade: Not at all; we didn’t meet beforehand, but our first day together on set, we just really clicked. We did spend a lot of time hanging out on set, though; we’d eat together and stuff so I think that really helped. He was so great in this movie.
Dread Central: Because the material is so unusual and both the comedy and horror tones are so subtle, was that challenging at all for you to dive into as an actress? And if it was challenging, was that part of the appeal, too?
Ariel Gade: Definitely! Some Guy has a touch of comedy to it, and that was new for me because I haven’t done comedy before. But it was fun to do something like that. I learned a lot, that’s for sure.
Dread Central: Did you have any favorite scenes in particular from Some Guy that you really liked working on or just ones you thought were fun?
Ariel Gade: I think two that I really liked that involved my character were the scene where my dad (Kevin Corrigan) and I are playing basketball together and he’s trying to teach me – that was great – and I also really liked the scene where we’re on the pretend date because it was a bit of a role reversal moment for our characters. I was the ‘adult’ and my dad was ‘the kid’ I had to teach.
Dread Central: And what’s coming up next for you? Any plans on returning to horror- it must feel pretty incredible to look back at the great career you’ve had so far in the genre world.
Ariel Gade: You know, I’m considering a bit of a break because I really want to attend the University of California at San Diego and get my degree. That’s what I’m hoping will be next for me. But yeah, looking back, I have had a really great time doing horror movies. It’s interesting to me to go back and watch the projects I did when I was younger, just to see what I was like back then. I definitely have been really lucky.
Synopsis
At first glance, Ken Boyd (Corrigan) may seem like an average comic enthusiast, living with his mother and working to make ends meet as an underpaid, underappreciated ice cream parlor attendant. But Ken has a dirty little secret: He fantasizes about killing people. After being released from a stay in the loony bin for severe mental trauma suffered when he was beaten and tortured by a gang of high school thugs, Ken’s repressed anger suddenly reaches a boiling point. He begins to hunt down his tormentors, one by one, and exacts his bloody revenge – all the while forming an unconventional bond with his estranged 11-year-old daughter (Gade). The film is written by Ryan Levin (TV’s “Scrubs,” Disney Channel’s “I’m With the Band”) and directed by Jack Perez (La Cucaracha, Wild Things 2, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus).
