Lynn Lowry Joins the Cast of DefTone Pictures Studios' OmbisA bit of casting news has come in for DefTone Pictures Studios’ upcoming feature film Ombis along with our first good look at the “Mutant”. In addition, just for fun, we have a photo of the legendary Lloyd Kaufman meeting up with the Ombis gang.

From the Press Release:
Cult actress Lynn Lowry (pictured right) has signed on for a cameo in the upcoming feature film Ombis. Ms. Lowry has appeared in such films as Paul Schrader’s Cat People (1982) and George A. Romero’s The Crazies (1973). Lynn will be playing a vital role in the conclusion of the sci-fi/horror flick.

Ombis director Adam R. Steigert had this to say: “I am very excited to have Lynn signing on to our production. The role we have her in is key to the ending of the film. With the production in its final weeks of principal photography, I’m thrilled to see how well the film is coming together. Some of what we were able to accomplish in Ombis is not normally seen in local independent films. Bringing Lynn to the film is just the icing on the cake!”

B-movie director/actor Lloyd Kaufman recently met up with the cast and crew of Ombis at the first annual Beyond Ghost ParaHorror Weekend, which took place at Buffalo’s historic Central Terminal on May 26th, 2012. The Central Terminal has been featured on Syfy Channel’s “Ghost Hunters” and was a perfect setting for the convention. Lloyd visited DefTone’s table and met the caged Ombis Mutant. Kaufman showed off a mask of his beloved character Toxie from the Toxic Avenger series while chatting with the cast and crew about his amazing career.

DefTone plans to release the first official trailer of Ombis at the end of July 2012.

Synopsis:
Ombis is a 1950’s styled sci-fi movie set in modern times. It’s the tale of an invasion of an alien virus which lands via meteorite in the small town of Metzburgh. Metzburgh is a former industrial town whose glory days are long past but whose residents are carrying on with their daily lives: loving each other and living life as best they can. In the midst of this idealistic backdrop, enter the hideous virus Ombis, which is intent on taking over the planet Earth and changing its residents into a host for a new species.

The only thing that can stop Ombis is Nemesis, an alien from the same home planet as the virus who was sent here to contain the alien scourge. The Nemesis’ disregard for the human race puts him in a position to ensure that the Ombis virus will be eradicated since he doesn’t care about collateral damage and will use any means necessary to destroy his enemy. The real story of Ombis, however, is the human struggle of the residents of Metzburgh: to fight for their village and for their very survival.

Ombis is based on a short story by Steigert and was written by him, Janeen Avery, Mark Mendola, and Terry Kimmel. The cast features Richard Satterwhite (Sheriff Thomas Brackett), Sara Manzella (Lucy), Jason John Beebe (Mark), Melyssa Jade (Savannah), Alexander Sloan McBryde (Mr. Gray), and Richard Winiatowski (Nemesis).

Thelma Is Fantastic and Now You Can Watch the Opening Scene

Published

on

One of this year’s most beautiful and subdued horror films is Joachim Trier’s Thelma (review), which opens in Los Angeles tonight. To give you a bit of what the film is like, The Orchard have released the opening scene, which shows a man and his daughter hunting in the bleak Norwegian winter. When they come across a young deer, the true intentions of this trip become apparent…

Having seen Thelma, I can tell you that it’s truly something special. It’s a slow burn, to be certain, but it plays out gorgeously, resulting in a film that has yet to leave my mind.

Locations and tickets for Thelma can be found here.

Synopsis:
Thelma, a shy young student, has just left her religious family in a small town on the west coast of Norway to study at a university in Oslo. While at the library one day, she experiences a violent, unexpected seizure. Soon after, she finds herself intensely drawn toward Anja, a beautiful young student who reciprocates Thelma’s powerful attraction. As the semester continues, Thelma becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her intense feelings for Anja – feelings she doesn’t dare acknowledge, even to herself – while at the same time experiencing even more extreme seizures. As it becomes clearer that the seizures are a symptom of inexplicable, often dangerous, supernatural abilities, Thelma is confronted with tragic secrets of her past, and the terrifying implications of her powers.
