Sam Raimi Brings the Spooky for Families
Genre royalty Sam Raimi cares about his fans -- from gorehounds who cut their teeth on the Evil Dead franchise to Spidey loving web-heads all over the world. Now he's getting set to take his terror filled things to a bit more of a family friendly level with his latest endeavor, Spooky Pictures.
Variety reports that Sam Raimi's genre label Ghost House is launching Spooky Pictures as a new banner that will produce thrillers for family audiences.
The first property out of the proverbial gate will be The Substitute, a remake of the Danish thriller that Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will helm and Columbia Pictures will co-finance and distribute through a first-look deal with Spooky.
This announcement follows a similar label launch by Disney, which has paired up with Guillermo del Toro to make scary flicks for family audiences through Double Dare You. This could be both good and bad for horror as a whole. Should these friendly horror films start making bank, our rated R gorefests may start taking a backseat.
Honestly we don't know whether to be rooting for or against this. I guess only time will tell.

I'm no fan of Roland Emmerich. With that said, his upcoming be-all, end-all disaster epic 2012 (opening November 12th) is currently tops on my list of most anticipated movies of the latter half of this year. Every trailer hypes 2012 as this terrifying end-of-the-world disaster thriller playing off real-life fears of what may lie ahead for us all in 2012, and then you watch this clip from the film and I defy you not to laugh.

Fuck this shit isnt there enough fucking films aimed at younger fucking audiences..when will they go back and start aiming films towards more adult audiences again

This sounds interesting. There's been somewhat a shift in demographics. It's been a great year in general for kids films: Coraline, Up, Ponyo, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs - are smarter than 95% (Horror included) of films marketed to 'adult' audiences. I'd love to see a platform dedicated to smart kids stories. Maybe another Gremlins or Monster House could be produced. More fun at the theatre for me and my younguns!

I'm actually really excited about this. When I was a kid one of the films that got me excited about scary movies was "Something Wicked This Way Comes." I'm really excited about this renaissance of family films that are more than just talking animals.
