Werewolves Growl Their Way into Ultimate Fighting

Now here’s a movie after my own heart. Because aren’t we overdue for a mixed martial arts movie featuring werewolves? The film-to-be is titled Growl. The very notion of a movie about a traveling pack of underground MMA fighting werewolves makes me want to cheer.

ShockTilYouDrop got the exclusive first word on Growl straight from the producers:

“A traveling underground fight club called ‘The Brawlers’ arrive at a derelict ghost town tucked away in the Colorado Rockies. They meet the town’s only residents, the Maxilla family who want to buy on to the fight card. But the Maxilla family’s true intentions for the Brawler crew is soon revealed in teeth and claws. Some will be hunted, some will be feed, and some will become part of the family…whether they like it or not.”

The writer/director of Growl is a fellow with the unpronouncable name of Sxv’leithan Essex, a name that just dares you to ask him how many D&D hit points he has. Essex also made the recent straight-to-DVD Lionsgate vampire flick Bled that I’ve not seen, probably because it was a direct-to-DVD Lionsgate release about a vampire chick.

From the sounds of things Growl will not a straight-to-DVD production. Essex has gotten Lee Cleary, one of the producers of X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and the upcoming A-Team movie, on board to spearhead the project for a 2011 release. Word is that Kiefer Sutherland is being courted for the lead role.

Shooting isn’t even set to begin until next year so there’s still plenty of time to sell The Asylum on a Growl mockbuster entitled Bite Club.
