Dracula’s New Origins

Universal gives Dracula two new leases on life; on film and DVDNow that the consummate bloodsucker’s 75th anniversary is upon us, I guess it’s only fitting that Universal should want to resurrect Dracula yet again, this time re-telling his origin with a dabbling of actual facts from the life of Vlad the Impaler.

Variety reports that Uni has scooped up the script Dracula: Year Zero from newcomer scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The story, as the trade puts it, “explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler, depicting Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.” Ugh. Sounds…Gothy.

You might recall a while back that Jan DeBont was announced as producer on a film called Un-Dead, the first Stoker Family-sanctioned Dracula sequel to see the light of day that would bring back many returning characters. It’ll be interesting to see which of the two projects makes it out first…

Don’t forget, Universal is also releasing a brand-new DVD of the original Dracula, pictured above, which is either a re-packaging of or an improvement on the Legacy Collection series from a few years back. The disc is due out on September 26th, but no word on when Dracula: Year Zero will get rolling. I guess this is just a good time to be Dracula!
