The Bxx Has Been Opened! First Look Inside!Daniel Knauf’s experimental and innovative Bxx: Haunted has now opened to a limited number of explorers in a preview of the final product. If you got in, then you know what delights await for the curious. If not, well, I supposed I can give you a peek.

While the project still has a couple of weeks to simmer before it’s ready for public consumption, those of us lucky enough to open the Bxx have the full interface and almost all of the videos as well as some of the non-video documentation to go along with the tale.

Currently we can review documents related to the history of the house as well as diaries kept by the investigating team and another … well, that would be telling.

The interface is easy to use and encourages exploration. There’s a LOT to see here, but what you want to see is up to you. In six-minute chunks you can view the entire 32-hour length of the doomed paranormal investigation and learn the stories of both the haunting and the team doing the ghost hunting.

At first it’s a little daunting. It took me maybe half an hour to really get a rhythm. After that it became second nature to follow the flow of a segment, view what I wanted, and move on to the next. You could just as easily follow one character from segment to segment, then go back and pick up another. Or follow events and forget the characters, looking for action. This is the beauty of the Bxx narrative; it’s entirely up to you.

One extremely clever feature is that supplemental material I referred to above. It isn’t just extra stuff that enhances the experience like bonus materials on a DVD. You see the characters interacting with things on the screen, then go look at what they were interacting with in the extra material. What we have now are the diaries and logs … so you could easily check a log, find the time and location of the observed phenomena, and use those as shortcuts to the “good stuff”.

For example, Diane Tate, the second-in-command to Dr. Johnson, notes that at 4:55 am on Saturday morning, if you look in the master bathroom, you’d see…

…nah. You can wait.

Get in the Bxx when it launches for real in early April. Keep watching DC for more coverage as we come closer to the opening of the official Bxx: Haunted website and follow @BxxWeb on Twitter.
