For the third chapter in the My Super Psycho Sweet 16 trilogy, Kirsten Prout’s character, Alex, the unstable sister of heroine Skye Rotter (Lauren McKnight), is back to prove that bad (or emotionally damaged) girls have all the fun when she gathers a group to celebrate her Sweet 16.
Dread Central recently chatted with Prout about the changes Alex undergoes in My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Part 3 that fans can look forward to, the lowdown on an epic fight scene between her and McKnight’s character and her thoughts on whether or not this will be the last entry of the My Super Psycho Sweet 16 franchise.
Read on for the highlights from our interview with Prout, and make sure to tune in to MTV on Tuesday, March 13th, at 10 pm EDT for the premiere of My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Part 3.
Dread Central: So how much fun was it to be back for Part Three of My Super Psycho Sweet 16?
Kirsten Prout: It was so great! I can remember exactly when I got the call about Part Three- I was sitting at my kitchen table and I screamed out; I was so excited to be coming back to play Alex again. There’s just something fun about playing such an off-kilter character like hers, and to be able to explore her story again is really awesome.
DC: Let’s talk about Alex because she’s definitely carrying some serious baggage from the last My Super Psycho 16.
Kirsten Prout: You know, [director] Jacob [Gentry] and I talked about how I should play Alex this time around and how she was an homage of sorts to some of the more unbalanced female characters we’ve seen in genre movies over the last 30 years or so. She’s definitely very conflicted because of what happened in the second movie, and to see how her character grows in this one should be a lot of fun for fans.
Alex is kind of a villain of sorts in this movie, but she’s also a victim of circumstance, too, so I worked a lot with a writer friend when I was prepping for the third movie- I learned from him that the key to truly playing a great villain is that you always have to play it like everything you are saying and doing is completely rational in the eyes of your character and every action is justified. You never see yourself as the ‘bad guy’ and Alex is like that- she’s been wronged and she wants to make everything right and get some closure on her Sweet 16.
DC: I would definitely say that there has been some conflict that has been building up between Skye and Alex since the last movie.
Kirsten Prout: Yeah, Lauren and I have this great showdown; I don’t think I’m giving that away really because on the poster you can tell we’re clearly at odds in this movie, but I loved that Jacob put this moment in there between these two sisters. It takes everything that has happened between them to a whole new level. Both Lauren and I are trained in martial arts so doing all the fight choreography was a lot easier than you’d think. Jacob wanted it to be kung fu meets catfight, and I think we pulled it off.
DC: Is it hard saying goodbye to Alex after My Super Psycho Sweet 16: Part 3?
Kirsten Prout: I won’t lie- I am kind of disappointed it’s the end of the road with this movie. This third movie is bittersweet for all of us; I think both Lauren and I feel so connected with our characters – especially now – so it’s a little sad to have to say goodbye to them just when we both feel like we’re hitting our stride. But I know if they ever do decide to do another movie, I would absolutely want to come back. I think Alex still has a story to tell, but there’s also something refreshing about a series of movies that both begin and end on a strong note; we don’t want to overstay our welcome, right?
I know we’ve all been so thankful for the following we’ve gained from these movie, and it’s been incredible to see all the fans’ responses over the last two years. I don’t think people gave these movies a lot of credit when they first came out, but we keep surprising everyone, which is great. We all treat the Super Psycho films like we were making $40 million blockbuster movies and take them very seriously, too, and I think that kind of care shows. When you care, the fans care, too.
