I dunno, man. Looking at Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins … yeah, he’d win a staring contest, but only because we’d start laughing at the silliness of his visage.

Below you’ll find the latest still from Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows featuring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins and Eva Green as the witch Angelique.

The ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, Thomas McDonell, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath. Look for it in theatres in glorious 2D on May 11, 2012.

Synopsis
In the year 1752 Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England, to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass, and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet — or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor are Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

  1. Depp looks like a fucking anime character. Can there really be any discussion about that?

Either way, that’s not this movie’s biggest problem. That it’s being helmed by a director who stopped giving a shit almost 20 years ago is a much larger cause for concern.

  2. Wow…

I am floored. This Amanda person is like talking to a brick wall.

Absolutely NOWHERE did Steve say Depp looked silly because he was made pale like a corpse. NOWHERE does ANYONE say “He looks strange! Men who have been buried alive for two-hundred-years should look perfectly normal!” to use your words. In fact not once, not even a single time did someone say that he should look like “modern vampires.”

It’s like you came here just looking for a reason to argue and are totally oblivious to the fact that no one is saying you are wrong only that the film makers failed to achieve their goal in their opinion. Everyone likes the direction they were going in, some of us just feel they never got there.

Not once did he say anything along the lines of what you ASSUMED he meant by his comment about Depp’s silly visage. YOU assumed Steve meant that he should look more like a Vampire Diaries vamp. In fact there is not a single thing in the entire story to base your inference on other than your own knee jerk reaction to him not liking the look.

It fails to capture every single thing you referenced above and it does look kind of silly. 1. It’s the same Tim Burton goth crap with smokey eye makeup he has been trotting out for years. 2. The hair is just bad. It’s too wispy and too long. Just because they BASED his look on classic vampires like Orlok does not automatically give them a pass. They actually have to do it well. Just having a lose understanding of Dark Shadows and/or classic vampire aesthetics does not mean they applied them correctly to Depp’s character. Shoving feathers up someone’s ass does not make them a peacock.

Not a SINGLE time did Steve say Depp should not be pale, have long finger nails, etc. In fact if you actually paid attention to anything written instead of just screaming injustice or arguing just to rail angrily at someone you would have realized along time ago that Steve agrees with you on what a vampire should look like. What he said is that just because they poorly threw all those elements together does not make Depp the same as Barnabas.

Just because they say they wanted an old school vampire does not mean they actually achieved it. They may have had the best of intentions with the design of the makeup and character over all but that does not mean we have to like it if we feel it falls short of capturing the look properly.

How you could blithely go on and on post after post putting words in someones mouth is fascinating. NOT ONCE did anyone say they were wrong to base the look of the character on an “old school vampire”, they only said that in their opinion they failed in that task. How you managed to post so many comments yelling at someone who completely agrees with you but only thinks they could have done it BETTER is impressive.

  3. I just read that that the complete series of Dark Shadows will be released this April. However… House Of Dark Shadows and Night Of Dark Shadows won’t be released on DVD until sometime in 2013. Bummer!
