While the closing of Back to the Future: The Ride still makes my blood boil, it’s hard to stay mad at Universal Studios for their never-ending dedication to October thrills. Last year, I had the pleasure of attending the opening night gala event for Halloween Horror Nights (the single most fun assignment a writer can get) and I was lucky enough to get invited back for a sneak peak at what’s in store this year.
In the past we’ve seen themes from folks like Rob Zombie and Clive Barker, and this year Universal takes it to the next level with the addition of horror’s biggest icons – Freddy, Jason, and Leatherface in the “Carnival of Carnage” which promises more carnage, freaks, and mazes than ever before.
The preview festivities began with “Chainsaw Training” boot camp in which several of the park’s “scare-actors” were treated to a crash course in carving on the Hollywood Fear Factor stage. Over thirty chainsaws were fired up on en masse, as groups were instructed how to do the “the Leatherface dance” and step in unison as a psychotic marching band. The training ended when the park staff wheeled out a human dummy with truly messy results.
“Halloween Horror Nights” will extend over 10 nights in Hollywood and Orlando beginning Friday, October 5 and continue on October 6, 12-13, 19-20, 26-28 and on Halloween, beginning at 7pm. More information and advance tickets are available at the official Halloween Horror Nights site. We’ll continue with updates on the event, so keep it here as news develops.
