UK Readers: Grimm Up North Hosting Two Special January Screenings - Seventies Sci-Fi and Italian Cult ClassicsOur good buddies across the pond at Grimm Up North in Manchester, England, are putting on two special screenings this month: SEVENTIES SCI-FI SPECIAL featuring John Carpenter’s Dark Star and a documentary on the film, Let There Be Light: The Legacy of Dark Star, followed a few days later by a double bill of Dario Argento’s Four Flies on Grey Velvet and Michele Soavi’s Dellamorte Dellamore.

SEVENTIES SCI-FI SPECIAL – FRIDAY 20 JANUARY

DARK STAR (Pre-release screening)
Sourced from an original 35mm theatrical print, this is a new master from Fabulous Films with a new grade and extensive frame-by-frame digital restoration. It’s the finest presentation ever of this science fiction classic!

A brilliantly clever and funny parody of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dark Star follows a warped intergalactic mission to blow up unstable planets. Four bored astronauts fill in time between missions catching up on their tans, playing with a suspiciously plastic-looking alien until things start to go horribly wrong with the ships computer and a ‘smart bomb’ thinks it is God.

Dark Star was originally intended to be a 68-minute student film. Hollywood Producer Jack Harris managed to convince the filmmakers to shoot 15 minutes of extra footage and released the expanded version theatrically.

LET THERE BE LIGHT: THE ODYSSEY OF ‘DARK STAR’ (Northern Premiere)
An all new, feature length documentary from Ballyhoo Motion Pictures and VCI Entertainment exploring the controversial making of the John Carpenter (Halloween) and Dan O’Bannon (Alien) classic. Includes exclusive interviews with the actors and filmmakers including Carpenter, Tommy Lee Wallace, and O’Bannon’s final interview. Directed by Daniel Griffith.

Venue: Anthony Burgess Institute (behind Oxford Road, Manchester)
Tickets: £6.50 (plus booking fee)
Start Time: 7.30pm

Tickets can be pre-ordered here (your ticket will be waiting for you on the night)
