And the possible Oldboy casting news continues. Who does director Spike Lee have in mind to play the female lead in his upcoming redux of the Korean classic? Read on for the new dirt.
According to Twitch, with Josh Brolin now confirmed for the lead in Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy and the vultures circling Christian Bale for the villain role, the question of the moment is who will play the female lead? The actress being targeted to play the character – renamed Marie in this version of the story – is Rooney Mara (pictured right; A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
The new script for Oldboy was adapted by Mark Protosevich, who will co-produce. Roy Lee and Doug Davison will produce via Vertigo Entertainment with Lee’s 40 Acres & A Mule. Mandate president Nathan Kahane will executive produce.
Originally DreamWorks was looking to pick up remake rights from Chan-Wook Park’s original film in 2008, with the idea that Steven Spielberg would direct Will Smith. The story centers on a man who is kidnapped on his daughter’s birthday and held for 15 years in solitary confinement without explanation. He is eventually released and sets out on a path to take revenge on those who destroyed his life.
