Joaquin Phoenix Cast as The Joker in Martin Scorsese-Produced Origin Film?

I don’t think we’ve ever mentioned it here at Dread Central before now, but there is a Joker standalone film headed our way from producer Martin Scorsese and director Todd Phillips (The Hangover).
At one point it was rumored that Leonardo DiCaprio was going to be playing the Clown Prince this time around, but he has since moved on to Quentin Tarantino’s new Charles Manson movie.
Variety is reporting that stepping in for Leo is none other than the most intense actor of our age (hyperbole?): Joaquin Phoenix.
Personally, I love Phoenix and cannot think of someone who will play a scarier version of the iconic character. I just wonder if he’s going to keep his crazy-ass beard… That would be a fresh take, huh?
Nothing has been 100% confirmed yet, but if sources are to be believed, it is a done deal and the official announcement should only be days away. But we’ll see about that.
