SNES Classic King of the Monsters Smashes onto the Switch eShop

All the way back in 1991, publisher SNK released King of the Monsters on the SNES, a game which, as its name suggests, was about giant monsters beating the crap out of each other. Whilst it was a modest hit in Japan and even spawned a sequel, the King of the Monsters franchise remained a mostly unknown property in the West, although we can finally get in on some of the city-destroying action, as the first entry in the series is now available on the Switch eShop for $7.99.

You have a choice of six playable monsters in the game, including Geon (basically a horned version of Godzilla), the giant ape Woo, who is clearly an homage to King Kong, and Beetle Mania, who looks so similar to Megalon that one starts to wonder why Toho didn’t take legal action.

Anyway, if retro gaming’s your thing and you also happen to have a fondness for giant monsters, be sure to give this long-forgotten gem a try.
