William Lustig’s 1980 slasher classic Maniac is a hard film to watch. Not because it’s bad but because it just makes you feel so damned dirty. This is due to the stellar performance given by the late Joe Spinell, who really amped up the sleaze along with the terror.
According to Bloody Disgusting Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, Mirrors, High Tension) and producing/writing partner Grégory Levasseur are getting behind a remake of this gory classic with P2 director Franck Khalfoun at the helm.
Aja and Levasseur have written the screenplay and will likely produce. Maniac centered upon “a schizoid serial killer who randomly stalks and kills various young women in New York, which he sees as revenge for the mistreatment he got while being raised by his own abusive mother.”
