What’s this? A LIFETIME movie on Dread Central?

Yep, bloodsuckers, you’re reading that right.

We’re giving You Killed My Mother some special love today because the screenplay for this hard-hitting TV movie was written by none other than Stephen Romano, co-founder of Eibon Press, creator of Shock Festival and co-writer of Don Coscarelli’s Incident On and Off a Mountain Road for the legendary Showtime series “Masters of Horror.” Yes, that’s right – one of our own has gone way under the radar to infect the mainstream airwaves, and it all comes down TONIGHT on the Lifetime Movie Network at 8pm PST.

When we heard about this file, we had to ask Stephen what it was all about—and it turns out You Killed my Mother has an even deeper connection to the horror genre than we realized. Namely, its executive producer. That man is Pierre David, the near-mythical Canadian movie mogul who brought out David Cronenberg’s early films such as Scanners and Videodrome, not to mention the 80s horror classics Of Unknown Origin and Visiting Hours. David was also behind the later Scanners sequels, as well as the Peter Weller sci-fier Screamers and the original Wishmaster in the 90s—um, so yeah, here’s a guy with some real street cred also. Seems that mister David has been heavy in the Lifetime Original Movie game for years. I talked with Stephen about his collaboration with the legendary movie maverick, and he had this to say:

Well, Pierre David is one of those guys who’s been around a long time and he’s done pretty much everything. You know, he was even the original producer of Oliver Stone’s Platoon. So he’s made his bones and he’s a legend. He can do whatever he wants. I met him a few years back and was really impressed with his TV movie machine. He does four or five movies a year for Lifetime and that’s a super impressive track record. He thought I could bring a valuable new perspective to his projects and I needed a gig, so we both looked at each other and said, ‘Let’s do this thing.’ I thought it would be a challenge to create memorable characters in a somewhat unfamiliar genre… but really, at the end of the day these are thrillers, and thrillers are essentially horror movies. So I plugged right in. There’s a lot of collaboration on these films. It’s a really creative think tank. Pierre is very hands-on and brilliant. It’s been great.”

Sounds good. But is it really a horror movie, Stephen?

Says Romano, “Well, no… but we’re dealing in the same themes, obviously.  It’s all about murder.  The challenge was to make it accessible to the target audience and be true to the goals of the network and also sate my own muse somehow. As a result, this first one is super intense in a few places. It goes pretty dark within the accepted format. It’s inspired by some fairly twisted stuff in my own life, actually. The next film I wrote for Pierre will be even darker in a way. It’s called Web Cam Girls. We have a psycho with a knife in that one.

You Killed My Mother is about a teenage girl who watches her mom die in a hospital and then goes crazy on the doctors, attacking one of them and getting sent to a nuthouse for two years. When she gets out, she’s still bitter.  So she goes after revenge.  And it’s not pretty revenge either, according to Romano.

Yeah, our femme fatale in this one is a real MacGyver type, who rigs houses with booby traps and stuff. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a Lifetime movie where the angry woman goes after her mark with a gas bomb. (Laughs) It’s fairly risky. At least on this channel.”

However it comes down, we’re damn well tuning in tonight on LMN to see what Romano cooked up with the legendary producer of Scanners. It’s just too damn intriguing not to!
