Vertical Entertainment Prepares to Go Beyond Skyline in January

Just because your movie gets universally panned doesn’t mean it can’t still turn a profit at the box office. And when movies make money, sequels happen. And the one good thing about making a sequel to a movie that got terrible word of mouth is that there’s plenty of room for improvement. Such seems to be the case of the highly improbably follow-up Beyond Skyline.
While the original 2010 Skyline told the story of a global alien invasion from the point of- view of vapid background characters from any random episode of “Melrose Place” as they take refuge in their Los Angeles high-rise apartment complex as UFOs and cool-looking biomechanical alien monsters vacuum up the people of earth, Beyond Skyline goes globetrotting with police detective Frank Grillo heading to Asia to rescue his son from a nightmarish alien warship and cool-looking biomechanical monsters, with a little help from fellow badass Iko Uwais.
Synopsis:
When the population of Los Angeles is vacuumed off the face of the Earth, Detective Mark Corley storms his way onto an alien ship to rescue his estranged son. But after crashing the ship in Southeast Asia, he must forge an alliance with a band of survivors to discover the key to saving his son and taking back the planet once and for all.
Visual effects artist and original Skyline screenwriter Liam O’Donnell directs the surprisingly well-recieved sequel starring Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy & Election Day), Bojana Novakovic (Drag Me to Hell), Jonny Weston (Project Almanac), and Iko Uwais (The Raid).
Unlike the original, Beyond Skyline will not be getting a wide theatrical release. Instead, Vertical Entertainment will release the sequel on DVD/Blu-ray/VOD on January 16th.
No disc extras have been announced yet, but honestly, isn’t the mere fact that Beyond Skyline exists at all the greatest extra anyone could ask for?
