Utopia Fest 2017: Horror Invades the Middle East

Earlier this fall, we told you a little bit about Israel’s Utopia Fest, a genre film festival that takes place in Tel Aviv. Returning after taking a hiatus last year, the festival is aiming to blow the socks off of everyone’s feet by bringing incredible genre fare from around the world to the Middle East. Furthermore, if they’re successful enough this year, they’ll be able to convince the Ministry of Culture that their festival is deserving of financial support.
We here at Dread Central are always eager to help a festival that brings horror and other genre films to the masses, so we want to talk a bit about this year’s event!
Showing this year at Utopia Fest will be some truly fantastic titles, including S. Craig Zahler’s Brawl in Cell Block 99, a double treat from A24 in the form of It Comes at Night and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, a Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead-packed event of both Resolution and The Endless, and restored, remastered editions of both Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead.
From Israel itself, there will be a short film collection from Gan de Lange, Guilhad Emilio Schenker’s Madam Yankelova’s Fine Literature Club, Veronica Kedar’s Family, Eitan Gafni’s Children of the Fall, and Shay Scherf’s Anthrax.
On top of both feature-length and short films, Utopia Fest will hold additional events, including panels on women in filmmaking, Q&As with directors, a masterclass in creating virtual characters, and a selection of films for children and teenagers.
