Zombies to Take the Gold at the 2012 London Olympics

You know, I’ve never really been a big fan of the Olympics. I respect what they stand for and marvel at the prowess of each country’s athletes; yet, I can’t help but be bored despite the spectacle of the event. Throw in some flesh-hungry zombies? Okay, now you’ve gotten my full attention.

According to Screen Daily Cardiff-based Severn Screen (formerly Garage Light Films) is working with Warp Films (the company behind Donkey Punch and Hush) to make a zombie film based on the 2012 Olympics.

The Film Agency for Wales is backing the as-yet-untitled project with £150,000, and UK distributor Revolver is also co-financing. Chris Boyle will direct.

The film will shoot in Wales, where it will also be posted. A September shoot date is set, but the plot is being kept under wraps for now.

Strange Village, which includes two members of the Super Furry Animals, will compose the music.

Welsh-born Kate Crowther of Severn said: “This is the first project in a proposed collaboration between ourselves and critically acclaimed Warp Films. As a newly established company, an alliance such as this gives us greater visibility in the international market, as well as allowing us to expand the talent base we are working with. By backing a project such as this, the Film Agency for Wales are supporting our ambition to work with exciting new talents such as Chris Boyle, whilst remaining in, and working from Wales.”

Film Agency for Wales Chief Executive Pauline Burt added: “This is a great opportunity for Severn Screen to build on their growing partnership with Warp, whose business model has enabled it to become one of the strongest UK production outfits, which in turn should assist Severn Screen in building their own market profile and gain momentum for other productions on their diverse slate. There is additional Welsh benefit with the involvement of post-production house, Dragon DI who also worked on Warp’s Wales-based feature Submarine, as well as crew and the majority of the locations being Wales based. We are delighted to be on board.”
