Continuing what looks to be an exciting Halloween for our friends in the UK, Second Sight Films has added to its seasonal home video line-up the Guillermo del Toro-produced ghost story Shiver as well as William Friedkin’s previously absent from DVD The Guardian.

It would seem del Toro isn’t too busy with Hollywood projects like The Hobbit to lend his name to up and comers, and judging from the description given below, Shiver could be similar to 2001’s The Others mixed with some spooky Spanish folklore.

From the Press Release:
From the producer of Pan’s Labyrinth and The Orphanage comes Shiver, the latest chilling horror from Spain. Written and directed by Isidro Ortiz (Fausto 5.0) and starring Julio Valverde (The Devil’s Backbone), this nerve-jangling chiller premieres on DVD on 17 October 2011 from Second Sight Films.

Santi (Valverde) is a teenage outcast who suffers from photophobia, a severe aversion to sunlight that disfigures the skin immediately on contact with the sun. He and his single mother are forced to move away from the city to a shaded, remote village in the Spanish mountains, where they take up residence in an old farmhouse. After their arrival strange things start happening; animals and then people are found brutally murdered, and suspicion soon falls on the newcomer. But in the darkness of the forest something is hiding. And now it’s coming for Santi…

Shiver is a tense, evocative Spanish horror that will chill you to the bone.\

William Friedkin has made just three horror films: the head-spinning The Exorcist of course, the highly enjoyable oddity Bug (which also had a delayed DVD run), and The Guardian. If you’re like me and hold The Exorcist up in your top ten horrors of all time, then this should be a no-brainer when it’s unleashed from the good people at Second Sight, just in time for your Halloween horror marathon!

From the Press Release:
Following The Exorcist, Oscar-winning director William Friedkin returned with another classic tale of supernatural horror in The Guardian. This freaky fantasy horror comes to UK DVD for the first time ever, complete with some excellent bonus features, on 17 October 2011.

Phil and Kate are a young couple living an idyllic life in their LA home. When Kate falls pregnant with their first child, they begin the search for a nanny to care for their newborn. The lovely young Camilla (Jenny Seagrove – Judge John Deed) seems like the perfect candidate for the live-in role. She is a beautiful woman who devotes herself to looking after the baby, but it soon become apparent that the nanny is not what she seems…

Complete with man-eating trees and chainsaw carnage, The Guardian is a supernatural freakfest.

Special features on the release include “Return to the Genre” – An interview with director William Friedkin, “The Nanny” – An interview with star Jenny Seagrove, and “Don’t Go in the Woods” – An interview with co-writer Stephen Volk.

Season 8 Synopsis:
Last season Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group of survivors were confronted with their deadliest challenge yet. With the comfort of Alexandria, they let their guard down, only to be reminded how brutal the world they live in can be.

Feeling powerless under Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) rules and demands, Rick advocated the group play along. But seeing that Negan couldn’t be reasoned with, Rick began rallying together other communities affected by the Saviors. And with the support of the Hilltop and Kingdom, they finally have enough fire power to contest the Saviors.
