Universal Pulls the Plug on the Dark Universe

Five months ago Universal released a star-studded photo announcing the Dark Universe. The photo included Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man, Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, and Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s monster.

But now it seems all of those films have been canceled… for the time being, that is. THR reports Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan have officially stepped away from Universal’s Dark Universe after the failure of The Mummy.

While not completely DOA, Universal’s Dark Universe is exploring other options for continuation. These options include allowing filmmakers – such as producer Jason Blum – to make stand-alone films not connected to the larger universe of monsters.

“We’ve learned many lessons throughout the creative process on Dark Universe so far, and we are viewing these titles as filmmaker-driven vehicles, each with their own distinct vision,” says Universal president of production Peter Cramer. “We are not rushing to meet a release date and will move forward with these films when we feel they are the best versions of themselves.”

Back in October we told you guys that Universal shut down production on Bride of Frankenstein. Angelina Jolie was at the time rumored for the title role. But officially she is no longer attached.

We’ll let you know when we hear more about this topic.
