The Best Horror Movies Now Streaming On Max

Last Updated: April 3, 2024

Because (HBO) Max started the year off so strong with True Detective: Night Country, we’ve been waiting to see what other terrifying goodies they have in store for us this year. While they are adding some original content this month, like The Jinx – Part Two, that’s not their primary focus this April. The small but eclectic list of titles being added for your spring viewing pleasure goes to some strange places with movies like Black Swan. It includes a title that’s almost one hundred years old, The Unknown. The streamer is also the latest to allow subscribers the chance to rewatch The Strangers this year before the new movie comes out. So, there is definitely some cool stuff on the list, and I am excited to share what I have my little eye on this month.

Hotel Artemis

A nurse runs an exclusive and secret emergency room for criminals in a near-future Los Angeles. Maybe because I am all out of John Wick movies, I cannot help looking fondly at this title. Or, maybe because the all-star cast includes Jodie Foster, Sterling K. Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, Dave Bautista, Jenny Slate, and Zachary Quinto. Whatever the reason, I am looking forward to seeing this stream somewhere without commercial breaks because it is about damn time.

The Sympathizer (HBO Original)

A spy leaves South Vietnam near the end of the Vietnam War for the United States, where he continues reporting back to the Viet Cong. I am optimistic about this thriller, if for no other reason, Sandra Oh (Killing Eve and Umma) will be making an appearance. We also finally see Hoa Xuande (Cowboy Bepop and Last King Of The Cross) in a leading role. More importantly, Park Chan-wook (Oldboy and Thirst) co-created the series, co-wrote it, and directed some episodes. So, it is probably going to hit pretty damn hard. The more I learn about it, the more I think it will be appointment viewing. However, only time will tell.

The Trial

An office worker is arrested and tried without being told what his crime is. This 1960’s gem stars Anthony Perkins (The Psycho Franchise and Murder on the Orient Express) and Orson Welles (Touch Of Evil and Citizen Kane). Welles also wrote and directed this one, so you know it is a wild time before you even hit play. If you are still trying to cross off movies on your Anthony Perkins list, I suggest you join me in running at this movie while it is available on Max this month.

Victor Frankenstein

This version is told from Igor’s perspective, so we see his friendship with Viktor Von Frankenstein before he becomes a witness to Frankenstein’s monster. Are we constantly bombarded with unimaginative Frankenstein adaptations? Yes. However, how many of them have Daniel Radcliffe (Horns and The Woman In Black), James McAvoy (Murder In Mind and It: Chapter Two), and Andrew Scott (1917 and All Of Us Strangers)? It is almost impossible to have a bad time with all three of them attached to the project. While it is not a perfect film, it is great for a lazy Saturday. I plan to partake immediately.

Wes Craven Presents: They

Fears and phobias become very real to a psychology student who just experienced a traumatic ordeal. I was practically raised by Wes Craven movies, so I will always default to his films when making a list. I have not seen this one in forever, and I am happy to revisit it as an adult. Aside from refreshing my memory, this is from the era when I had a huge crush on Ethan Embry. So, I am more than happy to rewatch this film for a few reasons.

Everything coming to Max this April

I would not be me if I didn’t also point out that you can catch the goddess Michelle Yeoh in The Heroic Trio on Max this month. If you haven’t seen this 1993 action fantasy, do yourself a favor and get into it the second it lands on the streamer. The app really went with quality over quantity this time, and I love it. Let me know what titles you are excited to see this April at @misssharai.
