The Purge series screenwriter, director, and producer James DeMonaco is about to join the ranks of children’s author with The Curious Chronicles of Jack Bokimble and His Peculiar Penumbra, which is heading our way early next month.

Monaco previously co-authored Feral, a dystopian thriller novel, with Brian Evenson; but The Curious Chronicles of Jack Bokimble and His Peculiar Penumbra is his first book geared toward the younger crowd. It’s an uplifting coming-of-age tale about how it feels to be different during the rocky terrain of childhood, transporting us to the familiar, everything-is-possible world of Roald Dahl.

DeMonaco explains, “[When I] finally decided to try my hand at writing a novel – I wanted to do something very personal. This was a daunting task. Unlike screenwriting, where the script is a basic blueprint, not the end product of the endeavor, the novel is the endgame and the final product everyone will see. A bit unnerving… As if looking in the mirror, The Curious Chronicles of Jack Bokimble and His Peculiar Penumbra is a metaphor for my own childhood. Simply put, Jack Bokimble is me! [The book] …chronicles Jack on his journey, as he strives to use and understand his unique power. It’s also the story of a very shy boy who comes to learn that being different and extraordinary is a truly wonderful, fantastic thing.”

Inkshares is releasing The Curious Chronicles of Jack Bokimble and His Peculiar Penumbra on November 7th; you’ll find pre-ordering info here.

And remember to keep your eyes on DC for more info on The Purge: The Island (a prequel showing us the very first Purge Night) as we edge closer to the film’s July 4, 2018, release. It’s written by DeMonaco with Gerard McMurray behind the camera.

Synopsis:
Shortly after Jack is born, strange things are afoot in the Bokimble house―glasses fall from shelves, and nothing seems to be where Mr. and Mrs. Bokimble left it. Jack’s parents begin to sense that there’s something strange about their son, and it’s not long before they realize that he has a secret friend: his magical shadow.

Is Jack’s shadow a superpower that he needs to control and master? Or is it a curse that will separate him from others? Travel with Jack on his boyhood journey as he learns not only how to control his magical shadow but what it means to be different―a story that mines the potential for magic and mystery in all of us.
