The Stranger Things Video Game Paid Homage to Stephen King’s IT

About a week ago, we posted an article about the “Stranger Things” mobile game, which is a free-to-play (no in-app purchases, either!) app on both iOS and Android platforms. To say that it’s addictive is an understatement. My bathroom breaks have nearly tripled since I got that game, which I’m not ashamed to say at all.

One of the cool things about the game – aside from the fact that it’s a complete nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminding me of games like Earthbound and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – is that it’s packed full of neat little winks and homages. Perhaps the most obvious yet delightful of them comes during the sewer stage.

Let me explain: each stage has five different items that you can optionally find and break so as to get a heart piece (a lá Zelda). In the sewer stage, these five items are red and blue balloons. If that doesn’t immediately make you think IT, especially after the ridiculous “Stranger Things influenced IT!” situation that came up a few months back, then I don’t know what to say!

I snagged some screenshots from the game to show you these balloons PLUS I captured a screenshot of a poster that pays homage to another TV series: “The X-Files”! See if you can spot the reference!

Additionally, if you collect all 8 VHS tapes in the game, you unlock the below extended trailer!
