Graphic American Horror Story: Cult Mass Shooting Scene Edited Prior to Airing This Week

This Tuesday’s Episode 7.06 of “American Horror Story: Cult,” titled “Mid-Western Assassin,” was supposed to include a graphic mass shooting that was intended, according to exec producer Ryan Murphy, to make “an obvious anti-gun warning about society.” Now, however, in light of the recent deaths and injuries in Las Vegas following a similar incident, he has opted to re-edit the ep to keep most of the violence off-screen.

Per THR, during an appearance at this weekend’s New Yorker Festival, Murphy explained that the scene in question was shot in September, before the October 1st massacre at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival. And even though the episode was “locked” and ready to air, he “…just made the decision that I’m going to have all of that violence be shown for the most part off-camera.”

“My point of view was I believe I have the right to air it, but I also believe in victims’ rights, and I believe that now is probably not the week to have something explosive or incendiary in the culture because someone who was affected might watch that, and it could trigger something or make them feel upset. So our decision was to re-edit it, and I felt that that was the right move,” he said.

“Nobody ever talks about victims’ rights. That’s sort of a weird emotional discussion that’s never bridged,” Murphy added, “but I felt great sympathy for people who were affected, certainly, and family members and loved ones and people who are upset about the way the world is.”

Per a statement from FX: “The edited version of the episode will air on the FX linear channel, while the unedited version of the episode will be available on the VOD platform of your cable, satellite, or telco provider, as well as on the FX Networks non-linear platforms, FXNOW, and FX+.”

“Mid-Western Assassin” airs October 10th at 10PM on FX; you’ll find the preview below.
