One flick we’ve been keeping our eyes on for a while now, Donner Pass, has finally reached completion, and we’ve got the early word and some brand new eye candy for you horror lovin’ cats! Dig it!
From the Press Release: Arroyo Filmworks is proud to announce the completion of Donner Pass, the first feature film from Emmy award-winning director Elise Robertson. Susan Jackson (Cabin Fever), president of Turtles Crossing, has signed on as sales agent.
Featuring an ensemble cast of talented young actors alongside Hollywood veterans John Kassir (Jack the Giant Killer, Tales from the Crypt) and Eric Pierpoint (Transformers II, Holes), the story follows a group of teenagers who get snowed in near Lake Tahoe – the same spot where the Donner Party became snowbound and was forced to resort to cannibalism 150 years ago.
A legend persists that the Donner Party fell victim to an evil curse, a hunger that remains in those mountains to this day – even that George Donner himself is still out in those woods, still hunting. For the seven teens, it’s just a scary story to tell around the fire. But when one of the group turns up not only dead, but half-eaten, they must face the possibility that the legend may be true.
Fear takes hold, secrets emerge, and the teens begin to turn on each other. Quickly, a mythical killer becomes the least of their worries.
Filmed on location in Big Bear, California, and in Los Angeles, with make-up effects by Ralis Khan (The Collector), nothing – and no one – is what it seems in this tightly woven dark thriller. And history doesn’t always stay in the past.
Producer Mouncey Ferguson comments, “We set out to make a movie in the tradition of the great thrillers and classic horror films of the 70s and early 80s – which was part of the reason we opted to shoot on Super-16mm film. What appears early on to be a simple slasher movie unfolds into something more haunting and provocative, an unsettling exploration of man’s inhumanity to man. We hope fans of thrillers and horror will enjoy it but that it will also appeal to a broader audience.”
“The script is so rich in character detail – each of our teens has a complex and surprising arc – all adding up to a meaningful commentary about human nature,” says Robertson, who has previously directed for PBS as part of the “American Storytellers” series. “But we also set out to deliver some fresh scares and some original moments of dread.”
Adds screenwriter Scott Adams, “It always struck me that Lake Tahoe – this beautiful vacation spot – had a dark, grisly past. And that became the seed for the whole story: What if the Donner Party wasn’t an accident? What if the hunger was a part of the place?”
With a running time of 90 minutes, Donner Pass is expected to receive an MPAA rating of “R”.
Synopsis
In 1846 a party of settlers became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and had to resort to cannibalism to survive. Some 150 years later a group of teens on a ski trip discover that the curse of the Donner Party still haunts those mountains when members of their group start turning up not only dead, but half-eaten. Nothing – and no one – is what it seems in this provocative dark thriller. And history doesn’t always stay in the past.
