Hammer Horror Meets Rocky Horror Meets Alice Cooper in New Play Mad Women in My Attic!

Published

on

The upcoming stage show Mad Women in My Attic! has been described as “Hammer Horror meets Rocky Horror meets Alice Cooper.” If that sounds like your kind of crazy, then read on for more info, including a new trailer.

From the Press Release:
Cabaret performer Monica Salvi and filmmaker Samantha Oči have partnered up to create an eccentric promotional video for the upcoming stage show Mad Women in My Attic! A Cabaret of Musical Lunacy, which is due to be performed in London and New York in October 2017.

Shot in London’s Murder Mile Studio (a renowned alternative venue and S&M dungeon), the below trailer for the play is full of dark humour. Miss Salvi describes it as “Hammer Horror meets Rocky Horror meets Alice Cooper” – citing these influences as her greatest inspirations whilst growing up. Paired with the dark and dramatically lit atmospheres that characterise Miss Oči’s cinematography style, the trailer seeks to conveys a small taste of what is to come with Miss Salvi’s full theatrical show.

Miss Salvi had this to say about the trailer and forthcoming show: “I think we all have a trigger for madness within ourselves to some degree; and the more we acknowledge it, explore it, and allow our ‘emotional madness’ to come out in a healthy and creative way, the easier it is to recognise it in others and build better relationships, not based on judgement, but on understanding. I want this show to inspire people to unleash their own streak of madness!”

Miss Oči added: “I’ve always been drawn towards imagery that is both dark and surreal, and I think that my cinematography reflects that. Mad Women in My Attic! really appealed to my sensibilities, and I was very excited to work with Monica and the eccentric women that she unleashed during the making of the trailer. Against the bleak and dark backdrop of the dungeon where the trailer was filmed, I really liked the juxtaposition of intense colour against black, as I felt that it highlighted Monica’s colourful characters as we delved into their dark but insanely magical world.”

Trailer Synopsis:
Typecasting and a theatre career drove her to insanity. She exchanged stage wings for padded walls, glamorous costumes for a white nightgown, adoring audiences for a bunch of inmates. Yet, she will sing! A mad woman proudly recounts the roles and songs that made her who she is today, celebrating that fine line between creativity and madness.

About the Show:
Set in an imaginary lunatic asylum Mad Women in My Attic! is the semi-autobiographical cabaret brainchild of Monica Salvi, an Italian performer based in London, UK. With multiple costume changes, haunting and comedic songs from the most daring and dark musical theatre repertoire (such as Sweeney Todd, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Threepenny Opera, Next to Normal, Jane Eyre, Sunset Boulevard), and some kinky audience participation, Mad Women in My Attic! is a fantastic romp through murderous, wicked, and insane characters that Miss Salvi had the pleasure to play in her stage career.

Creative Team:
Monica Salvi is an Italian actress and singer who, ever since her graduation from London’s Royal Academy of Music, has often been typecast in roles of crazy women. Artist’s website: monicasalvi.com

How Did THE FIRST PURGE Come About?

Published

on

This July we will see the beginnings of The Purge universe with the prequel The First Purge. Franchise creator James DeMonaco recently spoke to EW and dropped a new official image (which you can see above) and also talked a bit about how this first purge came to be.

Marisa Tomei’s characters is a psychologist who is responsible for the idea of the Purge, and Demonaco says, “She feels that a societal catharsis would be good. She is a psychologist who has created the Purge, and she actually does believe it’s something that society needs. It’s a very angry society. She’s seen a citizenry that is rioting quite often in the country. She actually believes in — it’s a weird thing to say — the purity of what the Purge might do and she wants to try the experiment. She doesn’t see that the government, the NFFA, who’s putting it into effect has a completely different agenda.”

But why would Staten Island residents agree to be Purge guinea pigs?

There’s a monetary component, meaning if you participate, and you stay on the island during the Purge, you will receive a $5,000 stipend,” says DeMonaco. “So, mostly, poor people stay and rich people leave. But obviously there’s twists and turns, and government manipulation, and all these allusions to the Trump administration.”

Was that DeMonaco’s idea to post the film’s teaser during this year’s State of the Union address?

No, I wish it was, man,” he says. “Universal marketing has always — and I give them credit for this — you know, they’re very subversive. The movies are subversive, and they’ve pushed the subversive angle, and they jumped on that, and I think they saw the script was subversive in a way that they could use, and they always push the political content. Is [the film] about Trump? Listen, I think good science fiction puts a mirror up to society. What people respond to with The Purge is that it is reflecting on our times, where many people feel that they’re not being taken care of. So, I think that it definitely reflects what’s happening right now.”

The film is directed by Gerard McMurray from a screenplay by James DeMonaco and stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei.

The First Purge begins July 4th, 2018.

Synopsis:

Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
