The resurrected

Wow.  We’ve got one heck of a list for you, friends.  First, there’s something I must address.  We all love the horror community; that’s why you’re reading this, right?  Well, the horrors of fiction and the horrors of reality often consist of very different things.  To our friends and families in the Texas and Florida areas affected by these monstrous hurricanes, you are in our hearts.  Stay strong.

Let’s get the discrepancies out of the way first.  The Don’t Torture a Duckling and The Suspicious Death of a Minor Blu-rays had originally been slated to drop this week, but now all of my sources point to October 3rd.  If one of those was your choice for this week, you just have to wait it out a bit longer.  Additionally, there are two titles that have very little information but are on my radar, so I’m going to include them here:

Are You Here?

Scream Collection

Like I said, at the time of writing this article, there isn’t much information about either of these titles, so your guess is as good as mine.

This week, Best Buy is releasing a bunch of limited edition Steelbooks containing classic Universal monsters, such as Dracula, The Invisible Man, and Frankenstein.  I have included a section specifically for these titles at the end of the article below the Collections section.

This week will see the 4K Ultra HD release of Split, Get Out, The Purge Collection, Dracula Untold, Van Helsing, The Mummy (2017), The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.  That’s not a bad selection of films, and they all will look stunning in 4K.

There are some newer movies I’m sure some of you are fiending for.  You can check out Danny Trejo in Dead Again in Tombstone, which will be getting both Blu-ray and DVD releases this week.  Some other recent releases also hitting shelves this week in some form or another include this year’s hit It Comes At Night as well as Cannibal Cop and Margo.

If you’re looking for some titles from yesteryear, our classics (and almost classics) this week include Event Horizon, The Resurrected, and the lovely Jennifer Connelly in Dario Argento’s  Phenomena.

Next we move on to our collections.  There’s an offering from the Evil Dead franchise.  There’s the entire Psycho collection.  You can also pick up the entire Phantasm collection too.  Hell, if you like your horror to have a bit of an overdramatic flare, there’s even the Lifetime Scary Movie Set.  That’s a lot of parts of the horror spectrum covered right there.

Keep reading below because I don’t want to spoil the whole list for you.  Remember to keep checking back, as each week leading up to Halloween brings us more and more titles.  Pleasant viewing, friends.

The Creep Behind the Camera (2014)

Starring:

Josh Phillips, Jodi Lynn Thomas, Bill LeVasseur

Synopsis:

A creature is haunting the streets of Los Angeles, waiting for the cover of night to stalk innocent young girls. Hungry for fame and fortune, it’s fueled by a demonic rage ready to devour anyone attempting to hinder its becoming the most powerful entity in Hollywood. While sometimes called A.J. Nelson, this demon is more commonly known as Vic Savage. This is his story…

In 1964, Vic Savage made The Creeping Terror with a microscopic budget verging on the non-existent. Quickly earning a reputation as the worst movie ever made, it tells of the arrival of an unconvincing alien life-form (a shambling carpet creature made of plastic tubing, wire and soap) that devours its picnicking, dancing and guitar-playing victims. Much like the infamous Ed Wood, Savage managed to pull off a variety of schemes to convince an honest producer to invest in what he promised to be “the biggest monster movie ever made”.

Told through re-enactments and containing shockingly true stories of many of the actual people involved with the production, Pete Schuermann’s The Creep Behind The Camera is the funny and ultimately terrifying saga of the making of The Creeping Terror, and a disastrous portrait of a talentless artist who ultimately succumbs to his own self-destructive behavior. Starring Josh Phillips in the larger-than-life performance as Vic Savage, and Jodi Lynn Thomas (AMC’s Preacher) as his unsuspecting wife Lois, The Creep Behind The Camera pays vibrant tribute to an inglorious chapter in the history of genre cinema, incidentally exposing one of the most unimaginably radical antitheses of the Hollywood dream.

The Fox With a Velvet Tail (1971)

Starring:

Analia Gade, Jean Sorel, Rosanna Yanni, Tony Kendall, Maurizio Bonuglia

Synopsis:

This 1971 Italian/Spanish giallo is a hugely enjoyable and very stylish murder mystery set on the luxurious Côte d’Azur. Spanish director José María Forqué – who later made the controversial Beyond Erotica – brings together a talented and good looking cast, one of the best cinematographers of the day (Alejandro Ulloa) and a fantastic, lounge style score from Maestro Piccioni to create a twisty, and twisted, tale of deception and revenge. The director’s long career at the more prestigious end of Spanish cinema and the presence of award winning scripter Rafael Azcona – who worked with many top European film makers – give the film an edge of sophistication alongside its enjoyably devious narrative.

The film is like the smooth blue waters of the Mediterranean where it’s set. It looks inviting and seductive, the sun glistening off the gentle waves; but just beneath the surface, sharks are swimming, and they’re hungry for prey…

Synopsis:

This greatest of all Frankenstein movies begins during a raging thunderstorm. Warm and cozy inside their palatial villa, Lord Byron (Gavin Gordon), Percy Shelley (Douglas Walton), and Shelley’s wife Mary (Elsa Lanchester) engage in morbidly sparkling conversation. The wicked Byron mockingly chastises Mary for frightening the literary world with her recent novel Frankenstein, but Mary insists that her horror tale preached a valuable moral, that man was not meant to dabble in the works of God. Moreover, Mary adds that her story did not end with the death of Frankenstein’s monster, whereupon she tells the enthralled Byron and Shelley what happened next. Surviving the windmill fire that brought the original 1931 Frankenstein to a close, the Monster (Boris Karloff) quickly revives and goes on another rampage of death and destruction. Meanwhile, his ailing creator Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) discovers that his former mentor, the demented Doctor Praetorius (Ernst Thesiger), plans to create another life-sized monster — this time a woman! After a wild and wooly “creation” sequence, the bandages are unwrapped, and the Bride of the Monster (Elsa Lanchester again) emerges. Alas, the Monster’s tender efforts to connect with his new Mate are rewarded only by her revulsion and hoarse screams. “She hate me,” he growls, “Just like others!” Wonderfully acted and directed, The Bride of Frankenstein is further enhanced by the vivid Franz Waxman musical score; even the film’s occasional lapses in logic and continuity (it was trimmed from 90 to 75 minutes after the first preview) are oddly endearing. Director James Whale was memorably embodied by Ian McKellen in the Oscar-winning 1998 biopic Gods and Monsters. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Starring:

Richard Carlson, Julie Adams, Richard Denning, Antonio Moreno, Nestor Paiva, Whit Bissell

Synopsis:

In the early 1950s, a scientific expedition into the Amazon recovers a strange fossilized claw that could be a missing link between creatures that swim in the seas and those that walk on land. Once the fossil is examined, a larger, better-funded expedition is authorized to travel deep into the interior of the Amazon Basin to hopefully find more examples of the long dead creature. But as the expedition pushes deeper into the unexplored reaches of the great waterway, they come to the realization that “something” is watching their every move, stalking them… on the land, and in the water!

Dracula (1931) (Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook)

Starring:

Bela Lugosi, Helen Chandler, David Manners, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, Herbert Bunston

Synopsis:

“I am….Drac-u-la. I bid you velcome.” Thus does Bela Lugosi declare his presence in the 1931 screen version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Director Tod Browning invests most of his mood and atmosphere in the first two reels, which were based on the original Stoker novel; the rest of the film is a more stagebound translation of the popular stage play by John Balderston and Hamilton Deane. Even so, the electric tension between the elegant Dracula and the vampire hunter Professor Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan) works as well on the screen as it did on the stage. And it’s hard to forget such moments as the lustful gleam in the eyes of Mina Harker (Helen Chandler) as she succumbs to the will of Dracula, or the omnipresent insane giggle of the fly-eating Renfield (Dwight Frye). Despite the static nature of the final scenes, Dracula is a classic among horror films, with Bela Lugosi giving the performance of a lifetime as the erudite Count (both Lugosi and co-star Frye would forever after be typecast as a result of this film, which had unfortunate consequences for both men’s careers). Compare this Dracula to the simultaneously filmed Spanish-language version, which makes up for the absence of Lugosi with a stronger sense of visual dynamics in the lengthy dialogue sequences. In 1999, a special rerelease of Dracula was prepared featuring a new musical score written by Philip Glass and performed by The Kronos Quartet. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Frankenstein (1931) (Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook)

Starring:

Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boles, Boris Karloff, Edward Van Sloan, Frederick Kerr

Synopsis:

Still regarded as the definitive film version of Mary Shelley’s classic tale of tragedy and horror, Frankenstein made unknown character actor Boris Karloff a star and created a new icon of terror. Along with the highly successful Dracula, released earlier the same year, it launched Universal Studio’s golden age of 1930s horror movies. The film’s greatness stems less from its script than from the stark but moody atmosphere created by director James Whale; Herman Rosse’s memorable set designs, particularly the fantastic watchtower laboratory, featuring electrical equipment designed by Kenneth Strickfaden; the creature’s trademark look from makeup artist Jack Pierce, who required Karloff to don pounds of makeup and heavy asphalt shoes to create the monster’s unique lurching gait; and Karloff’s nuanced performance as the tormented and bewildered creature. Frankenstein was greeted with screams, moans, and fainting spells upon its initial release, obliging Universal to add a disclaimer in which Edward Van Sloan advises the faint of heart to leave the theater immediately. If they don’t: “Well…we’ve warned you.” Director James Whale was memorably embodied by Ian McKellen in the Oscar-winning 1998 biopic Gods and Monsters. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Mummy (1932) (Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook)

Starring:

Boris Karloff, Zita Johann, David Manners, Arthur Byron, Edward Van Sloan, Bramwell Fletcher

Synopsis:

The Mummy represented Boris Karloff’s second horror starring role after his “overnight” success in Frankenstein. Brought back to life after nearly 3,700 years, Egyptian high priest Imhotep wreaks havoc upon the members of the British field exposition that disturbed his tomb (shades of the King Tut curse). While disguised as a contemporary Egyptologist, he falls in love with Zita Johann, whom he recognizes as the latest incarnation of a priestess who died nearly 40 centuries earlier. Spiriting Zita away to the tomb, he relates the story of how he had dared to enter her ancestor’s sacred burial crypt, hoping to restore her to life. Caught in the act, he was embalmed alive and his tongue was cut out for his act of sacrilege. Now that he has returned, he intends to slay Zita, so that they will be reunited for all time in the Hereafter. Despite its melodramatic trappings, The Mummy is essentially a love story, poetically related by ace cinematographer and first-time director Karl Freund. Jack Pierce’s justly celebrated makeup skills offers us two Karloffs: the wizened Egyptologist and the flaking, rotting mummy, who though only seen for a few seconds remains in the memory long after the film’s final image has faded. Best line: “It went for a little walk.” The Mummy was followed by four stock footage-laden sequels, none of which approached the power and poignancy of the original. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Wolf Man (1941) (Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook)

Starring:

Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, Warren William, Ralph Bellamy, Patric Knowles, Bela Lugosi

Synopsis:

“Even a man who is pure at heart/And says his prayers by night/May become a wolf when the wolf-bane blooms/And the moon is full and bright.” Upon first hearing these words, Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney) dismisses them as childish folderol. After all, this is the 20th Century; how can a human being turn into a werewolf? Talbot soon learns how when he attempts to rescue Jenny Williams (Fay Helm) from a nocturnal attack by a wolf. Collapsing, Talbot discovers upon reviving that Jenny is dead-and, lying by her side, is not the body of a beast, but of a gypsy named Bela (Bela Lugosi). The son of fortune teller Maleva (Maria Ouspenskaya), Bela was a lycanthrope, or “wolf man.” And now that he has been bitten by Bela, Talbot is cursed to suffer the torments of the damned whenever the moon is full. Arguably the best of the “original” Universal horrors (original in the sense that it was not based on an existing literary property, a la Frankenstein, Dracula and The Invisible Man), The Wolf Man boasts one of the most stellar casts ever to grace a “B” picture: Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, Evelyn Ankers, Ralph Bellamy, Warren William, Patric Knowles, Maria Ouspenskaya and Bela Lugosi. The man-to-wolf transformation sequences — one of which took a full 24 hours to film — are thoroughly convincing, thanks to the cosmetic genius of Jack P. Pierce (Chaney had wanted to emulate his father by developing his own werewolf makeup, but existing union rules would not permit this). Alas, after this powerhouse opening volley, the Wolf Man character was relegated to a series of cheap sequels, teaming him with other Universal shock stars: Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (1943), House of Frankenstein (1944) and House of Dracula (1945). The final ignominy was Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1945), in which Lawrence Talbot (Chaney again), having been cured of lycanthropy in House of Dracula, reverts to his werewolf status — and has to endure the one-liners of Lou Costello to boot! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Which Monsters May Be Making Their TV Debut in Junji Ito Collection?

Published

on

Studio Deen’s highly-anticipated anime anthology Junji Ito Collection has been building buzz, especially since its new teaser dropped weeks ago. Eagle-eyed fans who are well-acquainted with horror mangaka Junji Ito’s body of work will spot some familiar faces in the new trailer, brought to the small screen by showrunner Shinobu Tagashira.

So, who among Ito’s famous menagerie of monsters may be making an appearance in the show when it airs next year?

Oshikiri Toru

Oshikiri is the morally-questionable highschooler who begins to question his perception of reality in Hallucinations, a series of some loosely connected one-shots. Oshikiri’s a little on the short side, with an even shorter fuse. One thing he’s not short on is moneyas evidenced by his impressive, albeit creepy, mansion. We’ve yet to see which of his adventureswhich range from murder to parallel dimensionswill be his television debut.

Yuuko

The once-chatty Yuuko falls ill and sees her worst fears come to pass in Slug Girl, the famous one-shot whose brand of body horror is sure to feel like a distant cousin (or maybe a predecessor?) to Uzumaki‘s “The Snail” chapter. It offers little in the way of answers but is best enjoyed in all its bizarre glory.

The Intersection Bishounen

In Lovesick Dead, one of Ito’s longer standalone stories, an urban legend causes a rash of suicides when young girls begin to call upon a mysterious, black-clad spirit called the Intersection Bishounen. The custom catches on quickly among teenagers, out late and eager for him to tell them their fortune in life and love, since his advice is to die for. Literally.

Souichi Tsujii

A long-running recurring character in Ito’s manga (probably second only to Tomie herself), you’ll know Souichi by the nails he sucks on or sticks out of his moutha strange habit borne out of an iron deficiency. He’s an impish kid whose fascination with the supernatural makes him the odd man out in an otherwise normal family. The morbid pranks he likes to playfunny only to him—don’t do much to endear him to his peers or relatives, either.

Fuchi

The titular character in Fashion Model, Fuchi works as a professional model for her, shall we say, unique look and Amazonian stature. When she and another actress are hired by a crew of indie filmmakers, Fuchi shows them that she doesn’t like sharing the limelight. She also makes a cameo in a couple of Souichi’s stories, and in them he finds her genuinely attractive. Beauty, after all, is in the eye of the beholder.
